Steeper swing plane for shorter irons?

By way of background, had my second lesson yesterday and the primary area I've been working on with my instructor thus far is keeping my club on the proper swing plane. For me, this has meant adjusting to a more inside-to-out and "flatter" swing plane. It's still very early in my retraining but I've been really pleased with the results so far. My trajectory is a little lower then I'm used to, but my shots are coming off the club much straighter with a slight draw if anything. Consistency is going to take some time, but my misses are now hooks vs. weak push fades.

Anyway, I was at the range yesterday practicing. After working on some of the suggested drills, I decided to work my way up my bag. I noticed that I was hitting my mid/long irons, hybrids, and driver really well but for the life of me couldn't connect with my short-irons. We're talking flat-out shanks like I've never swung a club before.

I'm guessing that part of the problem was my swing plane was actually too flat for these clubs and, given the shorter shafts, I need to maintain a somewhat steeper plane (maybe not as vertical as my old swing, but not as flat as I've been working on with my instructor).

I'll be going for another lesson in 2 weeks and plan on discussing it with my instructor but figured I'd see if anyone on the forum had feedback.

The steeper swing plane of the shorter clubs comes from the club head being closer to the body and increasing the angle between the floor and the shaft. Are you holding the club too far away or maybe getting too close to the ground by bending your knees too much? I'm no expert by the way, just thinking how you might be creating the wrong plane with your setup.

Could be the club being too far away now that you mention it. My instructor has suggested I move back a little more (with some tweaks to my posture) and that seems to work well when I have a mid-iron or greater in hand. Perhaps I'm overdoing it on the short irons.
