Yes, but I don't think that means they have to be English. EPL big boys are buying up very young talent from abroad and coaching that through their academies which then qualifies as 'homegrown'.

That's true. If they've been here long enough, they're homegrown.

But the point remains that very few clubs have the resources to pre-empt the system in that way, and that were the English kids better coached at the younger ages they'd be better placed to take advantage.

I spent a winter in Spain a couple of yeas ago and watched a lot of kids being coached. I'm talking about 7 to 12 year-olds. The difference in approach is quite striking.

I doubt anyone expected that after two matches in Group D, England would be out, Costa Rica would have the inside track to winning the group, and Italy-Uruguay would be an elimination match. We're 40 minutes away from having that.

Wow, I just checked the FIFA World Ranking--> http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/index.html

Italy #9
England #10
Costa Rica #28

Costa Rica decent, Italy limp. England put out of their misery, and not impossible that Italy will follow them out.

Way to go Costa Rica!

Well yes I was saying it is a reason for England's poor performance, and not just recently, but over recent years too!
I'm aware of the English quota and it's been needed for far too long! I think it's a great idea as far as England are concerned, and should be increased! But no, it's not the only reason they have been poor, and I certainly agree about them being overpaid, it seems to affect ambition!

And....France won in 17 minutes

If Switzerland falls apart, it may make the Ecuador-Honduras worth watching: so far in this match cycle, the last match of the day has been between two teams with little hope of advancing playing dreadful soccer.

I'd say "fall apart" aptly describes their performance. They looked terrible. But France is certainly making a statement this World Cup. 8 goals in 2 games?!  Given up 0.

This is a terrific performance by Iran. Looking as if they might be able to beat one of the best teams in the world. Simply extraordinary.
