Hey guys I am. 24 and about a year and a half ago I had a stroke which was the result of an old illness (long story). Anyway I am about 85 to 90% recovered and yesterday I hit my hurst bucket of balls since my stroke. By the end of my practice I was getting the balls off the ground. However since I had a stroke I couldn't turn like I wanted to and have lost allot of distance I mean a huge amount and I am trying to find a way to adapt and get some pow so I can hit at-least average Has anyone gone through or know someone who has gone through a similar situation and how u or they handled it? Thanks AF

Glad to hear you are recovering! First I need to ask if you have consulted with your doctor if you are well enough to golf. Second, please take your time and realize it will be a long road so don't over do it! I suffered from a brain aneurysm awhile back and what helped me was taking SLOW swings and focusing on rhythm and tempo. I found this helped alot. If I swung too hard my head would pound. So maybe making small easy good swings might in grain good practise. Build from there.

Just take it slow.    Remember, good golf is about hitting the sweet spot of the clubface - don't have to swing hard to get respectable distance.    Work on a slower, smooth tempo swing & you'll be surprised what you can accomplish ... just don't rush it - glad you're back on the course.

^^^^^^ This. Glad to see that your on your way back to getting in some golf. Yeah, just take it slow, swing about 30% to 50%. And do consult with your doctor.

Also glad to hear you're recovering. It's also great that you're not letting that hold you back! In addition to consulting your doctor (you REALLY need to do that!), do you have a rehabilitation therapist that you're working with? If so, it would likely be helpful to talk to him or her about finding ways build your swing. Another idea is to find a certified TPI instructor who has a good understanding of anatomy and how to work around any physical limitations. I don't know what part of your brain was effected, but, as you probably already know, the encouraging thing is that the brain has an amazing ability to work around deficits (i.e. it's plastic) and with time you'll hopefully continue to improve and improve. Best of luck!!!!!! (But talk to your doctor first! ;-) )

Thanks for all the responses guys To answer some of your questions. 1 the doc has cleared me to play golf. 2. My physical theropy is over and now I am just working by my self with exercises they gave me and still progressing. 3. I am taking it slow now. About half sings maybe a little more. 4. Golf use to be such a stressful sport for me no I don't care so much how I am playing just extatic and thankful to be able to play. 5. One problem is my left side can't turn fast as my right and my left arm gets in the way so I literally have to release the grip of my left hand on the club ant the point where the club head is in front of my lead leg. However sometimes my left hand gets caught up so I am trying to adapt my swing. And since I am only swinging 50% I have lost all my power. Thanks for the encouraging words everyone.

I'm not sure if this would be helpful, but below are a couple of good clips on using your right side. Another thought is to try and find an instructor who has experience in working with someone with physical limitations. I know I already mentioned this above, but you might want to look into seeing a certified TPI, although I don't know if they're qualified to work with someone in your situation--worth checking out, though. Another idea is to post your swing on the members swing thread on this site and see if one of the pros here can't give you some ideas. Best of luck!

hey guys didn't know if any of you would be interested in an update but here it is:

Went to the range yesterday and the day before things kept getting better. Getting more stuff off the ground have a little push but not enough that would send me off the fairways and a high percentage of my shots are strait. Hitting my PW about 85 to 90-105 now which is up from 70-80 when I started 7 iron 130 and 5 iron 140 (when I hit it well having a little trouble with the mid Irons). I am now able to carry my left side through a little more. My left side has freed up more tonight after I hit balls so I am looking forward to playing Monday. I am progressing fast as it is all coming back to me.  I am going to try and adopt a style of short but strait shots and power will come later. My goals are as

follows:

1.Get to playing on a easy course (This one http://www.nevelmeade.com/Number-3.html) without embarrassing myself in a week or 2

2. Get to play well on an easy course

3. graduate to a harder course.

4. get good on it

5. Join an Kentucky amateur tour.

I also have a scrabble coming up in a month I would like to play in

Hi. Glad that u r getting better. You are only 24 and still have lots of golfing to do :) happy that u r playing again. There was an old man near my place who had the same problem. Had a stroke or something and couldn't move his left arm as fast as his right. He ended up slowing his swing speed to match the speed of his left arm. So his swings are slower but still hitting far. Not sure what he did, but I'm sure you will get your game back. :)
