Greetings all,

My name is Andy. I've lived in NYC my whole life, and a year ago I started playing this frustrating and amazing game called golf. As with most here, it consumes me, and after I play I usually try to figure out when I can play again. I spend a decent amount of time at Chelsea Piers since it's convenient, but I really wish someone would open a cheaper range on the West Side of Manhattan.

If there are local people here, I'd love help with the following questions:
-Courses where people are tolerant of new players
-Suggestions on playing as a single but being relatively crappy (I've broken 100 once).
-Great golf values w/in a 2-3hr drive from NYC such as places with play and stay packages.

It's exciting to be on a board where my (for lack of better word) obsession is embraced. I look forward to conversing with you all soon.

-Andy

Greetings all,

Whats up Andy, I live in manhattan as well and I REFUSE to go to chelsea to whack some golf balls...im not sure what the price is now, but last i checked (something like a year ago) it costed 20 bucks for a bucket of 80 balls! Ridiculous price (i dont care if it has an automatic tee). I much prefer randall's island golf center. The only downside is that its not actually on the island of manhattan and is closer to the east side of manhattan. To answer your questions, here they are. 1) Van Cortlandt Golf Course (last stop on the 1 train in the bronx). Right now might not be the best time to go if you dont want to deal with horrible greens. Last time i went, they were UNPLAYABLE...nothing but dirt...the groundskeeper told me it was a fungus that messed it up, but that it should be in good shape within the next two weeks - we'll see about that. On the other hand, it might be the best place for you right now - im betting the course is wide open since noone wants to play on those greens (the fairways, etc are actually in satisfactory condition given its a public course in the bronx...its just those greens!!!). 2) I often show up as a single (and get this - my buddy went as a single twice and got paired up with John Starks from the knicks...TWICE...weird eh? Apparently he appreciates the "low key" atmosphere). They generally dont care...on crowded days, you may have to wait for other singles or a double to show up for you to hop on with. And dont worry, I'm not much better than you it seems...also, the greens are currently in horrible shape, so you really shouldnt have issues showing up as a single. 3) I dont really have an answer for that one...but i know there are some out there! Perhaps ill see you out there some time! Cheers! -Pete

When I started, I went to Chelsea too, for lack of choice. Soooo expensive, lines to deal with, not even real grass and you can't see your ball flight past 200 yards.

Moshulu is a good place to play and practice - it's 9 holes and at the last stop of the 4 train. You can also try Split Rock/Pelham, Rockland State Park, Bethpage in LI, accessible by LIRR and Mohansic and any of the Lower Hudson Valley munis. Many others I'm sure I neglected.

Good value golf day trips - Lyman Orchards in CN, Olde Homestead in PA, Union Vale in the Hudson Valley. Actually, Eastern PA has alot of good value golf.

Have fun.

Steve

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to look out for Stark at Vannie (does he play golf like the Game 6 John Stark or the Game 7 John Stark; either way, one of my favorite Knicks.)

CP is so convenient for me, as I bike past there to and from work during the week. But last night I went to the Alley Pond driving range in Queens (less than a 10 minute drive from Douglaston which I'll have to remember before my next round there) and hit 100 balls for $10. CP, your days are numbered.

My problem with Vannie is that it gets so crowded. I expect the crowds at the NYC munis, but two weeks ago we had a group behind us that was very impatient, even though we were one stroke behind the group in front of us and there was nowhere for the group behind us to go. My friend left a wedge at a hole and instead of returning it, they threw it to us. I need to win the lottery so I can get on a less crowded course :)

Oh, and as mentioned, the "greens" at Vannie were mounds of dirt two weeks ago- completely unplayable. Hopefully they're finished aerating them for the year.

I look forward to playing with you guys soon!
-Andy

Hey Andy, welcome. I am also a new member here and from NYC. I live in Brooklyn though and work in Manhattan. I refuse to go to Chelsea and pay their insane prices to hit range balls. I am a bit lucky though, I have a car and I am often in NJ during the summer on weekends so I hit the ranges around where I am for that weekend.

Quick question for you fellow NYCers- I just read through the thread on golfing alone , and realize that it's something I'd love to try to do every now and then. Are there any city courses that this is a possibility during the week? I have to imagine that Van Cortlandt is busy no matter what day or time it is. Any suggestions?

I've only been there once and it didn't seem that bad to me either.

Thanks for the Vannie insights. Of course, I tried to go there last Friday for a mellow round, but there was an outing. I did end up playing Mosholu- not my favorite city course, but definitely a good place to work on my game.
