So I played 2 Saturdays ago, shot well, screwed up royally around the greens and finished with an 88.  Drivers were nice, irons were pure.  Hit a bunch of greens.

Last saturday I did not pure a single shot.  Played really well around the greens thankfully and saved a 94.  However, I started hitting these 40 yard grounders that sliced with my irons. ALL DAY.

Played 9 after work today just to get those thoughts out of my damn head.  First hole I topped the tee shot into the brush 10 yards to my left.  Irons sucked ass all day.  Took a 10 on a par 3 where I put 3 balls in the drink that was right in front of me.

I don't have video of my swing right now, but what the hell is going on?  What are these low flyers that go like 40 yards and slice?   I have a big round Saturday and I'm afraid I'm screwed.

I finished the last 2 holes today with Birdie/Par but it was not the norm for the round...

Any tips/suggestions with that little bit of info would be great.  Seriously.

Jim

40yd grounder slicing.....are we gonna say...shank? Sorry. I really am. Hard to help without video, but maybe you've played/hit balls too much? Take some practice swings...start from the basics.... 1. Am I gripping the club as I normally do? 2. Is my posture correct? Distance from the ball? 3. Is my stance aligned to my target? 4. Is my tempo the same...does it "feel" right? 5. Put masking tape on your club face and see where you're making contact. 6. Relax....nice slow and deep breaths. Hope this helps.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thanks @mvmac I'll give that a go on Thursday.  Definitely need to get to the range before Saturdays round.

Vinsk, yes, that's the word i was looking for - SHANK!  Was pathetic really.  Some weren't shanks though.  I still can't explain that 8 iron on the par three that i put right in the drink in front of me.  Then put down my second ball for my third shot, and put that in the drink too.  It's actually haunting me today.  Number 4 was the issue, everything felt "off" for the second round in a row.  Grip, posture, stance was all good.

This is very troublesome.  I'm playing with a couple guys from work Saturday and really really really don't want to have a case of the shanks in front of them.  I'll be catching shit for weeks.

I know I can play, I've never had a case of mis-hits like this ever before.  Iron play is usually solid.  shanking a gimme second shot from 80ish yards is just unacceptable.

Time to figure this out.   Or take up a new hobby :)  (Just kidding, I could never do that!)

I just went through this same exact thing! Few weeks ago I was puring all my irons. Last weekend was absolutely horrible, couldn't hit a decent shot for my life.

I went to the range and figured it out. I wasn't squaring the clubface. So I shortened my backswing, and I concentrated on keeping the clubface square on the take away. BAM!! solid pure shots again.

Try that....

Well I went to the range with a co-worker today on lunch who happens to be a scratch golfer.  I was losing sleep over the loss of my swing!  We get to the range and I shanked my first shot, he says "man youre standing way too close to the ball".  I took a look at my address and yep, somehow I decided in the last week to crowd the ball which caused all kinds of problems.  Stepped back a bit and I'm good as new!

He also saw that I had a lot of tension in my hands and he helped me get over that too.  I look forward to hitting some more balls tomorrow!

I have a six pack in the fridge with his name on it :)

Glad to hear you figured it out. Most of the time its something simple like setup and ball position.

Good luck on your outing with the co-workers.

  • 1 month later...

This makes me feel better. I was getting my iron stroke, driving them like crazy and hitting fairways and really starting to play great golf.

Then I went out to play a round 2 weeks ago and on the back nine and every since then I'm terrible. I'm done with taking advice from anyone. I had a guy "help" me and it all went to downhill.

Now I can't hit irons, driver is erratic and ironically putting is the one thing that isn't remotely terrible.

Been my experience that the first thing to look at is make sure you're turning your shoulders. You are concentrating so hard on making contact, that you are swinging with your arms only. Topped, worm burning slices.

Glad you figured it out. I was going to say almost every time my swing just falls apart it's because of my arm/body relationship. Keeping them too stif on my chest. Letting them get outside of my body. Etc, etc, etc. a sure sign for me is I just feel plain uncomfortable standing over the ball. Then I start moving closer and further from the ball. Then I figure out where my arms should be and everything else falls back into place.
