Hi, i am 15 years old and fairly new to the game of golf, but have really started to take it seriously this past year.  My average score at my home course on weekends is usually in the 84-90 range.  In my high school matches (our home course for school is much harder than my home course) i tend to be around 45 (give or take a few) for 9 holes on average.  As I am getting serious about the game, obviously breaking 80 is something I want to do in the near future.  What kills me in almost every round is i have 1 or 2 holes where i completely blow up and get something crazy like a triple or even quadruple bogey.  I have been on pace to break 80 in several rounds (+2 after 10, +4 after 13) but can never get it done.  My lowest score at my home course is 82, lowest match score 42.  I am also playing on a very competitive junior golf tour in my state this summer and don't want to get embarrassed in the tournaments, any tips appreciated

Get lessons like you talked about in the other thread you started. Don't expect too much too fast but work on it and have fun. Don't be "embarrassed". There probably isn't a bad shot, or shots, you could hit that everybody else hasn't also hit at one time or another.

A more consistent golf game. :-D , just teasing ya a bit there.

I recommend starting a My Swing thread on the forum here. You'll get some great instruction from some very smart people about your golf swing.

I am a big believer in the 5 simple keys to golf. A system that isolated the 5 things all good golfers do very well.

If you do post a swing, a lot of the practice videos already posted on the website, but are related to helping one of the 5 keys. Here is a good thread with a lot of instructional videos,

This thread is one that will really help you because it gives steps on how to practice. Golf is a process, and changing the swing for the better is a process. This thread will get you away from just beating golf balls down range all day and really focus on how to practice the proper way.

I would recommend video taping your swing and posting it on the forum. That My Swing thread will also help serve as a golf diary for you. So lets say you are working on a drill and it isn't working. Well just look up the post about that drill again, and see if any notes you kept will help out. I know I have to go through my thread a few times to remember something I forgot to do.

How often do you play?   My advice.....play a lot.  You need to play regularly to get better.   IE.....100+ rounds a year even if you live in a climate with real winters.   I guarantee you those good JR golfers live on the golf course in the summertime.  Many of them log 100+ rounds while on summer break from school.

Hit greens. Hit every par-5, just 2 par-3's, and only every other par-4. No 3-putts and you just shot 79. That's really all there is to it! :-)

I think you probably just need to keep playing and practicing as much as you can! You'll get there. I'm guessing you have all the shots in your bag to shoot in the 70s, you just occasionally don't perform that shot to the best of your ability which ends in those blow up holes. Just get more consistent and it'll happen less often!

All the advice in this thread is true. The only reason why I'm responding is because of what David in FL just said. I used to beat myself up on the front 9 if I scored over +3 because I felt I was doomed to not break 80 by scoring over +3 on the back 9. So  After scoring 42 on the front 9 and 3 birdies on the back 9 to card a 37, what David is saying is really more realistic. I had goals of making par on all the par 5's and all the par 3's. It didn't work out that way, but I made up for it on the back.

SO if you get very close to the green in 2 strokes most of the time, work on chipping  into the hole but not letting the ball roll more than 18 to 24 inches past the hole. Then 1 putt if you missed the chip. This has worked best for me. Also work hard on putting from the distance where your average 1st put normally is when you make a GIR. Good Luck.

I would encourage good course management. Don't try for the hero  shot that can raise your score. Play the odds all the time. Hit the center of the green if it is a sucker pin placement. Keep thinking risk vs reward. It you hit a ball behind trees make sure it just costs you 1 shot and not more by a hero shot to salvage a par. Maybe a bogey is reasonable for the bad shot just hit. On the mental side. I start the round over after every shot. I try to stay in the moment and hit the next shot instead of thinking about the score. I have been able to shoot in the mid to high 70s doing this!!! You can too!!!

The bolded info is what really helped me out.

Also - Who do you normally play with? Alone? If so, Id try to find the best player you know and play with them. Before I took a solid 2 year haiatus from golf (you're 15 youll learn about women one day) I was a 4.8 handicap and shot 77-82 reguarly. The one round I shot even par I was the high man in the group. Playing with better players will help you play better. Good players dont take too many risky shots. They make birdies occasionaly. Nobody is a pro here dropping 6-7 birdies a round every round, so take your one or two and make pars! You can do it man. Just remember. Golf is fun. I stopped playing mainly because I was so hard on myself. Went out this weekend for the first time since Christmas and shot an 86. Already dying to play again and score lower.
