This is going to be a short-term blog, more like a mini-series.  The reasons why will become apparent in the posts below.  This will represent things that I have been learning, experiencing, and doing over the last few months, so several of the posts will be retroactive.

This isn't about soliciting advice, help, or instruction (although feel free to talk about those things).  This is really about how I've managed to improve my game without "practicing" in the traditional way, played a lot of golf, had some great (and really crappy) rounds, and identified some persistent obstacles to continued improvement.

The Golf Surge.

I'm an Army Major with 16 years of service.  I love golf; I've been playing for 27 years including competetive play at the junior, high school, and college level.  Unfortunately, now, I've got a wife, kids, job, and eleventeen other things that prevent me from playing as much golf as I want.

Well, that changed in March of this year.  At least temporarily.  I had to attend a mandatory Professional Military Education course in Augusta, GA.  Turns out, they have a lot of really, really good golf courses here.  You may have heard of one or two of them.

Some proactive time management on my part, and an academic schedule, allow me to take free time in the afternoons.  A lot of free time.  Since March 20th I've played 48 rounds of golf.  That's right:  48 complete 18-hole rounds in 10 weeks.  How does that feel, you ask?  Awesome.  That's how.

I've got got 21 more golfing days until I head back to the wife and kids, during which time I should log another 15-20 rounds.  Over that time I've gotten to know my game better than at any time in my golfing career--including when I was playing competetively.  Not saying that I know how to play any better, but I have learned a lot.  Over the next few posts, I'll make observations about some areas as they apply to my game--

Golf as a sport.

Putting and consistency.

Tendencies, both within a round and with how your swing goes to shit in patterns.

"Practicing" on the course.

Reaching scoring milestones and wondering how good you could really be.

Playing for money and competing.

I've kept track of my scores by date, course, and score for every round I've played, so at some point I'll calculate scoring average and handicap.  Since I've started this thread, I'll probably be motivated to get some of this stuff out there.  Maybe I'll even post a swing video...or I could just have @Golfingdad you and spare your eyes the horror.

Nonsense, you have a great swing.  And one of the fastest I've played with.

    • Day 107 - More pitching practice, playing around with trajectory.
    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
