I've noticed that, on my 8 iron, the bottom groove appears to have begun to fold over onto itself. The groove is substantially shallower than the rest, and the second from the bottom groove is also starting to do the same thing (which is harder to discern in the picture). Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know how I might go about solving it? I would've never expected to see something like this from a club notorious for it's durability.

How long have you been using these irons? Yes they are durable but they are also 20-30 years old.

They look like the copper ones, which I guess are a bit softer too! Ping will refinish there old clubs, but they won't alter/ re-do their "controversial" edition of the square /box grooves!

I personally have only been using them for five years, but this wasn't there (or at least it wasn't this noticeable) when I bought them. They are the regular version of the irons as well, I didn't really have great lighting when I took the picture which I apologize for. Do you know if Ping will re groove them with modern grooves upon request? I'm pretty sure even the smaller current grooves will give more spin/consistency than this does.

@Pretzel ,  I think it might be time for new irons.

I answered the question myself by going to their club repair page, sorry to have bothered you:

  • PING does not regroove irons

I took the picture right after I finished a tournament round and got home, so that's why it's still dirty. I have the habit of cleaning my club before I hit while I wait for my competitors/playing partners to hit their shots. I really should get into the habit of doing that after each shot though to keep dirt from sitting on the clubface for extended periods of time.

As for the new irons, it looks like I may have an excuse to go iron shopping in earnest now instead of just perusing what the main manufacturers have for fun.

Shhhhhhh, I'm going to Golfsmith on Friday anyways for a new glove. Don't convince me of another option this soon!

I have discovered that the grooving tool is only an option if I have a couple of days to kill. After half an hour of effort in a vice with it, all I have to show is a couple scratches around the groove. I suppose it might have taken off a couple thousands of an inch inside the groove, but it would take many hours of work to get and even mediocre result. I feel the tools are likely meant more to sharpen up grooves that may have become dull instead of creating what are essentially entirely new ones.

Two bad holes marred an otherwise ok round. Dunked one in the water on a par 3 when the wind picked up in my face after I hit to a front pin position. I also had one hole with a plugged bunker shot that rolled off the green into a hazard. My home course has many bunkers, but it need to practice plugged lies since they're firm enough that the ball usually rolls a bit. Other than those two triples though the round was good, with only three bogeys otherwise, which is usual. What made it frustrating was two birdie lip-outs and another two that stopped within two inches of the edge. I hit 10 greens, so I had plenty of opportunities anyways. What felt the best about the round was that my tee shots were dramatically improved over the previous weeks, hitting 9/15 fairways compared to my usual 6 or so. Scrambling was good, only missing 2 attempts out of 6. In other words, hazards bit me hard that day and putting was fairly mediocre. No one putts other than scrambling, which kills a score. The overall score was bad, but I know what caused me to get into bad spots (too aggressive on a front pin with water short, lack of forethought should my bunker shot go long) in terms of sloppy course management. Disappointed with my performance, but it taught me things my home course couldn't.
