Went and was fitted for a new driver today.

I have a TM Superfast 9.5 loft / stiff flex and wanted to see if technology has advanced enough to justify getting something new.

So off to golf store to hit new drivers with my own on the simulator.

I hit about every new brand with 9.5 stiff flex and really wasn't seeing much of a difference.

Ready to leave, a pro came up to me and informed me I was using the wrong setup. He gave new the new nike covert with a regular flex and 11 degrees (yes 11!) .

I want from hitting 220 to 250 instantly! I couldn't believe it, I stayed about an hour hitting 2 old driver / 2 new driver and I was constantly hitting around 30 yards longer and straighter!

I always knew loft and flex is important, but 30 yards? I'm impressed to say the least.

Pretty sure I need to do the same thing. Wouldn't hurt to try anyway.

My "distance" and trajectory are about the same as they've always been on good shots but the good shots are too infrequent and it's taking some manipulation and uneeded effort to do it.

That maniupulation is causing accuracy issues (at least that's my theory).

I've always tried to play the lowest loft driver as possible...like 7.5-8*. For some reason I like the flight better, however that may not be what is optimal. A higher ball at the right trajectory does help with distance a lot.

I would highly recommend at least giving it a try (free to goto store and hit some anyways)

I just went in with an open mind I guess, but that was not what I suspected was going to happen that's for sure.

3 years ago I traded my 10.5 regular for a 9.5 stiff, I wouldn't believe it if you told me 3 years later to I would be 11 degrees and regular!

Most amateurs play too little loft and hit their drives too low.

I agree with you. I hit a high ball naturally so a lower loft works for me. I was a 4 handicap at one point and after a 3 year layoff I'm getting back to things.

Congrats ... Depending on ones swing speed the lower loft makes NO sense to me ... I always use 11

There are lots of folks smarter than me on here, but I think you had the wrong setup to start, and the pro did you a great service

This is a prime example of why going out and getting fitted is much more beneficial than just grabbing some clubs and trying them or buying them. In all honesty, I really need to get fitted for clubs but I don't have the money for it. Actually, I doubt even if I did have the money for it that I'd get away with spending it on golf clubs. 800-1000 for irons, 400-500 for a driver, 200ish for set of wedges, 200-300 for a putter, another 100-200 for a hybrid *2x for 2*.... Yeah, if I dropped that kind of money on clubs I'd be looking for a new place to live rofl.

 

*edit* Sorry for the slight tangent there, but definitely anytime you can get fitted for any club you are buying you'll end up with a better result than if you don't.

Yea I spanned my out over the past 3-4 years. 

 

Last year was my irons

This year was my driver and putter

 

Next are wedges. I NEED BOUNCE!!!

I was fitted from my driver down to my putter by titleist. my irons are +3/4" and 2* upright. Driver was set to Xstiff and 8.5* at the time. I am also 6'3 270lbs, if it makes a difference.

My driver is 11 deg. (Got it last year)

 

My brother is my most frequent golf partner, he said that's to much loft.

He had been playing with this new 9.5 deg driver.

 

This year he bought a new one, he opted for 11 deg!

 

It has made a world of difference in my tee shots.

I recently switched from a Ping G5 9* driver (the face cracked) to a Ping G15 10.5* and did not realize what I was missing.  I am 62 and my swing speed has slowed down about 5 mph over the last few years. I was hitting low line drives that would carry about 180 and hope for about 30-40 yards of roll, which I sometimes got.  With the 10.5, my drives travel on much more of an upward plane carrying 210-220 and rolling an additional 20 yards or so.  It has made a big difference on my second shot giving me a more reasonable approach distance.  I will poke one 250+ carry and roll usually once per round.  Both drivers are very similar and were regular flex so I have to attribute the improvement to the increase in loft.

I think it depends on the club, if I get more loft on my driver I don't think it would work out well for me. My driver flight is typically pretty high as it is. I did try out Matt's SLDR and even with it having a higher loft it still went a little lower on one drive and about the same on the 2nd drive so with that technology I would definitely need to loft up.

I think the first drive had lower flight because it was a horrible strike more than having less spin to be honest, the second one was well struck but slight push.

Have you had a chance to use it outside yet?  Not to discount good simulators, but I've recently gotten a new driver (based on simulator results) and I am actually going back to my old driver, based on real life results.

According to the simulator at my local Edwin Watts, my 7 iron goes 185 yards.  On the course, it carries about 160-165 yards.
