About a month and a half ago I had an intercoastal tear which hurt so bad I couldn't even think about swinging a club. My short irons and wedges are fine now and I can take full swings with them with no injury. However, long irons still cause a great deal of problems for me. I know that I tend to hit long irons on the toe of the club, and a 5 iron is what I was swinging when I got the tear and what I was swinging when it hurt me again the other day. Is there someone wrong with my swing to be causing this or have I just not healed up enough? Could stiff shafts be contributing to the problem? I just want to make sure I don't go out there and put myself out of commissionfor another 2 months because iI've barely gotten to play this season as it is. :( Anyone who can help me figure out how this injury occurs would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you mean "intercostal"!  Intercostal muscles take a long time to heal.  Longer clubs put more stress on your body because the mass of the club head is on a longer level arm. Also, range work puts a lot of stress on them because of the reduced time in between shots.  I would keep your swings easy on the range until fully healed.  Also, ice after each session and round to help speed healing.

These kinds of strains or tears can take a while to heal, and are often caused by repetitive stretching or twisting of the torso - just like in a golf swing!

Soft tissue injuries can take a long time to heal. I would go see a licensed physical therapist. They can put you on a rehab program to get you back on the course. Only thing is you have to listen to them, do exercises and stretches, and only go back when they tell you.

Good luck!

I'm going on three weeks with the same injury and tried today for the first time to swing a club, the results weren't good.  While I don't think I did any additional damage it's clear the injury isn't fully healed and I felt if I continued I would have done more damage so I shut down after 6 holes.
