Can shaft lengths be cut down approx 1/2"-3/4" and regripped without altering the playing characteristics of the clubs? I purchased a set of Taylormade Burner 2.0 irons on craigslist and the shafts are a little longer than my older TM irons. Thanks, Phil

No. You will affect angles and swingweight. Whether this is good is really up to you. 1/2 inch in length is probably matched by 1/2 degree of lie on those clubs. If they feel to long, and the toe is up when you are comfortable, I would suggest just bending them flatter and keep the distance.

Trimming 1/2" off a golf shaft will cause the swingweight to drop by 3 points. For example, D2 to C9. Also, trimming 1/2" will flatten the lie by 0.75°.

Before you start cutting, hit some shots with face decals on different irons: If you hit a lot of shots toward the heel, the shaft may be too long. Also, use sole tape to see if your lie angle is proper for you.

If you're not familiar with the tests, have a good clubsmith help you.

Focus, connect and follow through!
