I've been Playing Golf for:​ 15 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 15

My typical ball flight is: straight / slight draw

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: fade with driver

Hi

 

The video above was taken at a lesson I had last Friday. The instructor wants me to stay facing the ball longer - resisting with my hips on the take away.

 

I went to the range this week to try this and hit 100 balls with my driver. Virtually all of them were fades which I don't normally hit - although I'm nowhere near consistent enough to say I never hit them.

 

I was just wondering why this restriction in my hip movement might cause a fade ? Doing exactly the same produces a slight draw with my irons.

Sorry I should have added, I appreciate that there's no down-the-line view, but I'm interested in understanding why resisting with my hips should produce a driver fade.

Because you can't get the hands deep enough to come from inside for a draw and are probably forced to come from too outward a path.

And see this.  I don't like what your instructor is telling you in other words.  You need to allow the rear leg to straighten, not lock up but straighten a bit so the hip and arms can get a little deeper.

Bubba turns his hips quite a bit.

 

I'm suspicious of any instructor who tells you to "resist with the hips" (or lower body). Unless your hips are turning 55° or more… you probably don't need to feel "resistance."

@topgrape ,

 

Thanks for posting.  A down the line would really help.  It is much easier to see what the swing path is doing from DTL.  A lot of us have the issue of coming a little over the top and it has nothing to do with restricting the hips or not.  My swing thread shows what issue I have.  Yours may be similar or different.

 

Your swing looks pretty decent and it may be a minor adjustment that is needed.  But is also may take time to correct since you have been playing for 15 years.

Very interesting, thanks for the responses. The instructor filmed my first swing then told me to 'face the front' more (ie resist with the hips) and filmed my swing doing this.

 

He then showed me the videos side by side and drew some lines on pointing out that in the first my left knee moved towards my right in the takeaway and in the second it didn't move towards the right but made a more downwards move towards the ball, which he says is the movement I want.

 

Any thoughts on this ?

There are lots of good or great players whose knees move in slightly. It almost has to - when you rotate your hips, your left hip goes back slightly, which pulls on your left knee.

 

Three dots indicate starting outside/middle/inside of knee area in each of these guys:
