Hello all, I'm slowly up grading my woods. I already picked up a Cobra bio cell driver ( I'm loving this driver!) and saving my pennies for a 3 wood. As far as replacing my 5 wood Im not sure what way to go, standard wood or replace it with a hybrid. I'm leaning towards the hybrid with the thinking that it would give my a few more options of use. Am I on the right track? Has anyone else made a similar move? Any feed back will be helpful.

What is "right" for one person may be totally wrong for the next.  But for what it is worth, I am a fan of the 4w rather than the 3 unless you use the 3 a lot off the tee as a driver replacement.  The 4 is, for me, easier to hit from various fairway and "friendly rough" lies than a 3 and goes nearly as far.  Then the jump down to a 3h (or in my case a 7w) doesn't leave as big a gap.

@Totacs37 you just have to go to a store or demo say and figure out which one you like better. Some players like hybrids, some like 5 woods.

Also be sure to use the search function on the site, we have a few threads like this already

What type of courses you play, region, conditions and all that should weigh heavily in your decision IMO. Here because it's dry and hot in the summer the rough is often long and shaggy. When I used a hybrid I found it easy to completely slide the head under the ball or pop it up so the bigger head of a fairway worked better for me. Hitting from perfect lies similar lofted and length clubs performed the same, I have no shape, look preference. Other than some hybrids can have a lot of offset. Because of that the fairway works better for me.

Dave :-)

Check out a 4w. I absolutely love mine. I always struggled hitting my 3w off the deck but have no problem with the 4w.

My set came with a 5W and 4h. I use the 5W off the deck and on tee shots where there's a dogleg I need to avoid getting through. If I were making a new set from scratch, I would still go with a 5w over a 3h because I don't like hitting hybrid on tee shots, while my 4h is plenty of distance for scrubby lies. Regardless, it's the least used club in my bag by far.

Totacs, definitely try out a 4W. Also, since you already have a Cobra driver, consider the low-profile Baffler TRail fairway woods from a year or two ago.

TRail and TRail Plus came in the following lofts: 3W = 16* / 5W = 18* / 7W =20*. The faces on low-profile FWs are not very "tall", and really help golfers who have trouble getting normal FWs airborne. You can find them here and there for under $100 each.

Also, if you can find a Ping K15 FWs, these were low profile also, with lofts of 3w = 16* / 5W = 19* / 7W = 22*.

K15s and TRails are decent clubs to try out if you can find them.

Focus, connect and follow through!

If money isn't an issue check out the Callaway X2 Hot 4w (17*).  Its very easy to hit off the ground and has a bit taller of a face so you can get it through the rough fairly easy.  Also it looks good :-) .

Or even the Xhot fairways, those are great as well. Can get some good deals at Callaway pre-owned or here
