Hello all:

I have a very high ball flight with my irons, and I'm trying to figure out if that is something that needs to be fixed or adjusted. For context, I'm about 5'10 175 and I hit my 7 iron about 150-155 and the other irons + or - 10 yards from there. That yardage is all in the air, and where ever it comes down, it sticks. I leave pretty large ball divots on the green and soft fairways. Obviously I'm losing some distance, and I do leave it short occasionally, but I make pretty good contact and the flight is consistent. What are the positives and negatives to a high ball flight, and what can I work on to bring them down some? I've worked on putting the ball further back in my stance, but that seems to do very little to lower the trajectory.

Thanks in advance.

Your Hitting a 7i 155yrds, nice and high, and landing softly?? I can't see the problem with this! If you need more distance, use a stronger club!

When the wind picks up to about 20-30mph, give me a call... I could use the money. Seriously- there's nothing wrong with that ball flight- in most conditions. Do you play at all when the wind is up? There is where you would see the most effect against your ball. I would start practicing half shots with 3 or 4 irons, punch shots and runners to increase your repertoire on the course. Stick with your normal shot- then pull out the wind cheaters when needed. Conveniently, The Open Championship will highlight these shots all weekend when the wind gets up. Watch how they attack the holes in the wind and you'll see what I mean.

Do you want your ball to roll once it hits the green? Typically a ball landing soft on the greens is a good thing. If you feel like you are losing distance due to hitting it too high, you made be adding loft dynamically on the downswing, "flipping". I would recommend checking out Keys 2 and 3 .

This is why I am asking. I have no adjustment for windy conditions. It's not a high penetrating flight either, it's more like someone is dropping the ball out of the sky. Sometimes I am surprised it gets to the green, it keeps falling and falling and somehow makes it. Other times, as I said, it comes up short even though I feel I've hit it well.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

I'm currently having the same problem and really the only time I need a lower ball flight is narrow fairways and against the the wind.

I keep my ball position the same , inside my left heel, but I close my stance slightly fractionally with my hips, I tend to swing more 3/4 up and notice I grip a bit more firm pressure with the last three fingers of my left hand. My ball flight is low draw , whereas the normally its a high with slight fade bias.

Yes then judging by what you're describing and your handicap, very good chance it's a Key 2 or 3 issue. Don't try to fix it by playing the ball further back. For specialty shots it's fine, but not for stock shots.

Seriously, when I read your original post, it sounds like you are making really nice shots. Goes up and drops out of the sky.

@Hardballs sounds like he's being sarcastic, but he's not. Just use a longer club to hit further. If you said that you swing the 7i 90mph and carry only 155, that's a different story.

I think he's mocking the OP.

It does sound a little like that.

Yeah, although it's no certainty that the OP deserves it.  Sure, 155 is a solid 7i yardage for a lot of players, but if you're flipping and hitting super sky balls, I'd say that's not a perfect shot, or even a super desirable one, regardless of the distance.  I mean, there are worse misses to have (push fade two fairways over? Or is that just me...), but the flipped sky ball is definitely worth fixing.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
