Cannot hit 3 wood

My 3 wood was my favourite club until I finally learned how to be consistent with my driver.

Now I can't seem to hit it with consistency. It goes more or less straight but no height. Looks like a stinger or daisycutter.

I have no problem with a 3 hybrid (21*) and my driver (10.5*) is also good. But the 3W(15*) gets left in the bag.

Haven't spent hours trying to sort this out but it's starting to bug me. Any ideas?

It could be a couple of things such as ball position or just steepness in your swing.  If you could post a video in the Member Swings section, others may be able to help.  For me, my swing was a bit steep causing low flight.  I have been working on flattening my shaft plane coming down from the top of the back swing.  I am getting nice height now.  The rules below just help set up your thread and show you how to film your swing.  I would recommend both a down the line view and a face on view.

Hit the hybrid! You might want to even consider adding a 18* hybrid and pull the 3-wood completely.

Failing that, I agree, post a video and the swing gurus can give you a little insight. c2_beer.gif

I had a 5W that gave me the same problems. Found out I had tension in swing because I was usually using it for a distance that was too far for it, and my swing speed. I'd swing extra hard/fast, which would cause me to raise the swing arc just enough to copy the poor shots you described. If I swung it in a normal fashion, I did not have any of those low "daisy cutters" you mentioned.

My fix was to adjust my approach distances, and/or go to my 3W and choke down a little. I still don't use my 5W much, but when I do, it is much more dependable.

I have the same problem only I now have added hooks to not being able to get it off the ground much.  My problem stems from tipping back in the downswing.  I actually have the same problem with the driver as well.  Take it out of the bag for a while. I have taken my driver and 3w out right now.   I took nothing more than a 3 hybrid off tee this morning and played pretty well.

I agree with the others, post your swing.  If you are tipping back in the downswing shallowing the arch too soon, it will need some TLC.

Check the impact on the clubface with tape. Maybe you are topping it? Someone mentioned possibly being too steep but I think it would be the opposite. I take small divots with my 3 wood and my ball goes way up.

Thanks all for the tips. Next time I hit the range I'll try them out and failing that, take a vid.

I had thought of getting a 2 hybrid but Callaway don't seem to make them in the model I'm using (and happy with-Edge Tour).

I had the same problem with my 3 wood off the turf. I used to call my shots gopher killers. My problem was a sway in my swing. I now keep my head still and hit my 3 wood fine. I would probably score better hitting 3 wood than driver. My 3 wood always draws. I honestly can't remember ever fading it. Sometimes those draws turn into hooks if I don't finish my follow thru.

If the upper body gets ahead of lower body at impact, then getting the 3 wood off the deck airborne becomes a real challenge.
