Is my shaft not stiff enough?

Hello, I am 15 years old now and started playing golf about 1 year ago. I got a regular flex ping G20 last year, and a few weeks ago, got the SLDR regular flex. I have had stiff irons the whole time though. For the past few days, my swing has felt really really solid. Today on the range I was absolutely striping my irons right at the flagstick, and my distances are great for me, I'm 5'5 hitting my 7 iron about 170 comfortably, but I know for sure distance isn't much at all if you can't hit it straight. I have regular flex hybrid and 3 wood as well, and just about every ball I hit with the regular shaft was a snap hook or a really hard drawish hook ball. It isn't normal, but I have never hit my irons so good, but they are stiff, and I'm really inaccurate with my woods and driver now with the Reginald shaft, I was just wondering if you guys think the shaft could be causing some of this hook, because I know I'm swinging the exact same way with my irons, even my 4 iron, I am striping right at the flag.

I think without a doubt you need more than a regular flex. With a regular flex you need to be really aware of your tempo. You can swing a regular flex, but with your swing speed it is easy to over flex that shaft and cause hooks. Bring your club to a Golfsmith or the like and see what a swing monitor tells you. Swing a stiff shaft and you'll probably hit it much better. A comfortable 170 yard 7 iron swing needs a stiff shaft. Watch out for x-stiff. You may not like those. Like I said, get it out with a launch monitor. Think about the Medicus driver with the hinges. When you keep your swing in sync, the shaft doesn't break. Out of sync, it breaks. I think of regular flex shafts similarly. You can hit them, but you better be in sync. I don't know if I really believe that Mark Crossfield video. Normally I like his stuff, but not this one.

@westhabeast4444 ,

Welcome to The Sand Trap!

I only swing at 91-93 with my driver and I use a light stiff Aldila Habanero shaft that was fitted for me.  I would recommend going to a retailer that has a flightscope or similar system and try hitting both regular and stiff shafts with the same driver.  Example:  hit the Ping G25, reg and stiff and the SLDR reg and stiff.  Determine if your distance is affected and launch angle.  Also, how do the shafts feel throughout the swing and at impact.

If you really want to know the exact right shaft for you, go to a good fitter in your area .  You are young and are growing stronger and faster.  A good fitter will take this into account.  At your handicap, the right fit can make a difference.  Below is a link to fitters in your area compiled by Golf Digest.

http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/2013-05/100-best-clubfitters

Both those drivers can have the shafts replaced with the stock stiff version, so you don't have to spend a lot of money on an aftermarket shaft.

Let us know what you decide.

Awesome, welcome to the game of golf. Hopefully you keep improving!

It is hard to compare graphite to steal.

Also flex doesn't matter as much as you think. If you are hitting hooks with the longer clubs, then I would post a video on the site here of your hybrid swing.

You can create your own "My Swing" thread here, http://thesandtrap.com/f/4180/member-swings

Hopefully yes, I will get around to putting my swing on here, but it's strange because my longest iron is my 4 iron, and I'm hitting that very well, it just starts when I get to the regular flex, which is why I am suspicious. When I got my SLDR, it was about 1 month ago, maybe a little less. I went to dicks sporting goods looking for something different. I hit the stiff and regular, and they seemed about the same, the ball wasn't launching at the same angle though , it was a little lower. I feel as though now I have gotten stronger because then I also only hit my 7 iron 160ish yards. We got the regular , and I hit it really good over the next couple of weeks, and it's just now this week I am hitting my irons really straight , when a month ago I struggled a little bit. But now my woods are hooking. My hybrid is a little better, and my 3 wood a little worse and driver about every ball is a hook. My hybrid though still hooks. The loft on the sldr is 10.5 and that guy said more loft better so he set it to higher so it's a 12 degree regular flex. The ping g30 is actually out today, and if the numbers are better with stiff I can consider going to that. And thanks for the help guys. And the only thing about the mark cross field guy is he is a professional , so his tempo and stuff is all dialed in. I am talking about me, and I am shooting around the mid 70s, but if this hook continues, it could go to the 80s haha

Your looking at it the wrong way. A pro is someone (probably the only one because of how consistent their swings are) that benefits from getting the perfect shafts. If one FEELS better to you then by all means change but it won't actually do much of anything(feel isn't real).

Not a marketing ploy. Just no where near as important as people think. How many players do you think have a consistent enough swing to hit the center of the face most of the time? I don't even hit the center of the face all the time with my putter. The point is if you miss hit the ball a little its going to do a lot more to your shots than making sure you have the perfect shafts. Look at the video with Buzzer hes actually playing an XS when the numbers show not only could he hit the S he probably should. There's a lot to being confident in your equipment. So if you feel like playing a $400 upgraded shaft go for it.

No and what MC is saying in his video doesn't suggest that either. The take away from the MC video is flex isn't as important as other club specs and even that isn't as important as hitting the ball in the center of the face. The reason it "isn't important" to higher handicap golfers is the center of the face part isn't something they consistently do. He really doesn't even say it doesn't matter just that is doesn't matter as much as other things.

But that's just tip of the iceberg stuff. Even shafts of the same flex can be very different, different load and launch properties etc. And that doesn't even get into how identical shafts can be different, the tolerances on some shafts isn't real tight, could be off as much as half a flex and not exact in other specs as well. However again how that affects golfers of different skill levels varies. Probably important to remember when shaft manufacturers publish specs for their shafts even though they are different products the numbers they get are from robot testing.

Dave :-)

Wow, all these years I've been fooled. When I put those x-stiff shafts in my irons and they felt like broom handles, I was deluded. When I picked up those irons with R flex graphite shafts in them and sprayed them all over the county, it was really hitting the face improperly. When I went shopping for my latest driver, 3 friends of mine had the identical head I wanted with 3 different stiff shafts. The Fujikura went consistently right. The Graffalloy Blue sprayed the ball around. The Graffalloy Light consistently had a slight draw. Would never have thought I would like a light shaft. The shafts are the engine of the club. Makes all the difference in the world. I believe that.

If it makes you feel more confident it does make a difference. Its just like choosing a driver they are all basically the same. Obviously tour models are different from GI's and the SLDR is a difference animal altogether but the manufacturers can only do so much. They all might sound (feel) different but they all preform similar.
