MLB trade deadline

Well, the trade deadline has passed. As expected, Ruben Amaro Jr. solidified his position as the worst GM in baseball professional sports. I can't wait to see the next washed up 37-year-old he signs in the offseason for $15m a year. How did your team make out?

Red Sox offload Lester, Lackey, Andrew Miller, Gomes, and Drew after already trading Peavy and Doubront, pick up Yoenis Cespedes, Allen Craig, Joe Kelly, Kelly Johnson (who'll be released when he comes off the DL), a few solid prospects, and a draft pick.

Sad to see Lester go, but he's already favorited 2 tweets about him re-signing with the Red Sox in 2015 so I'm still hopeful!!! a1_smile.gif

Also still hopeful we'll hear about a trade for Victorino it Nava, but since it's past 4PM, that's looking increasingly unlikely.

Yeah the Lester move seemed more like a rental than anything else, especially when you consider that the Red Sox traded him for a batting practice champion.

I was kind of hoping the Brewers would make a move....

You don't count getting Gerardo Parra as a move? He's no world-beater with the bat, but he'll damn sure help the pitching staff with his defense.

I'm a Dodger fan who's sort of migrated to the Pirates in recent years, but still bleed some Blue. I was glad to see the Dodgers stand pat, but wish the Bucs had gotten Price. That would've been interesting.

That Oakland rotation is real scary now.

This was one of the most active trade deadlines I can remember; and let's not forget all of the big trades that happened earlier in the month (Samardzija and Hammels to the A's, Street to the Angels, etc.). As an Angels fan, the A's look a bit scarier now with that rotation, and the Mariners did nothing but get better. The battle for the AL West is going to be a good one and I would be surprised if 3 of the 5 AL playoff teams are the Angels, A's, and Mariners.

Also, what the hell is with the David Price trade. The most sought after pitcher on the market and all they got back was a solid 3 in Smiley, a decent middle infielder, and a shot in the dark prospect. Friedman is one of the best in my opinion, but I think he screwed this one up; Boston got more for Lackey.

Cool. Didn't know they did. Apparently not big enough news to make front page ESPN.

I don't understand the Yankees taking Drew.  That is like Cashman doing Cherington a favor.

Orioles picked up Andrew Miller from the BoSox. He should help down the stretch. I would have liked to see them get a strong lefty

bat. Chase Utley would have fit the bill but probably wouldn't have approved going to Baltimore.

Has a team ever gone from last to champs to last in 3 successive years? Crazy stretch. (Grew up in CT, die hard BoSox fan).

Yeah, that was a joke. I think "What?!" was just about everybody's reaction when they heard what Tampa Bay got in return.

I really dislike the rays. In their defense - this may have been the best they could do since there will be a strong crop of starting pitchers this off-season - led by crazy eye scherzer.

I personally think price is overrated

Favorite part of the trade deadline was seeing a bunch of reputable journalists and broadcasters being fooled by fake twitter accounts. I love the internet.

The only thing is, if that's the best they could get for him, then you keep him. I know that Lester and Scherzer are both going to be free agents come season's end, but there's going to be more than 2 teams in on those guys, and you can trade Price to one of the teams that loses out then. I'm sure that St. Louis would have given up more for Price than they did for Lackey, which is STILL more than the Rays got from Detroit.

I don't know how much the national media has talked about it, but remember with Lackey that his contract stipulates if he has an arm injury during the first few years of it (which he did), then he'll only make the major league minimum salary for 2015. That added a lot to his trade value.

I've heard that talked about, and that obviously did add a ton of value to Lackey. Still, you're talking about a solid number 3 versus a Cy Young contender. While Price is still expensive, it's not like he is a rental like Lester is, he is under team control for one more year.
