Sergio Garcia’s Tee Shot Knocks Diamond From A Spectator’s Ring

http://hotlinks.golf.com/2014/08/03/sergio-garcias-tee-shot-knocks-diamond-from-a-spectators-ring/?sct=hp6

For all his sparkling play of late, Sergio Garcia has shown some imperfections — like his wayward drive on the par-4 third hole during Sunday’s final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which strayed into the gallery and knocked the diamond out of a woman’s ring.

Garcia went on to make bogey, but he recovered nicely with the woman, handing her an autographed ball and requesting her contact information so he could compensate her for any loss or damage.

No need, it seems. Another fan found the diamond in the rough and returned it to its owner, apparently undamaged by the impact.

At least she knows it isn’t cubic zirconia.

Sergio told his people to get her contact number in case she could not find the diamond in the long grass. Presumably he would replace it if need be. Classy.

I heard about this on Mike and Mike this morning. Im not a Sergio fan by a long shot but that was a pretty classy move on his part. Im not so sure I would've made that offer but good for him. We're gonna have females showing up to golf tournaments fighting for position about 315 down the left fairways going forward with diamond-less rings on.

The only problem I see with it all is standing there waiting to get hit.

I used to detest Sergio but I feel like he has really grown since the whole "Fried Chicken" thing. Seems like he's exorcised some of the demons. Starting to like the guy.

I didn't detest him but I definitely like him more now than I had.

I used to like him a lot, he was one of my favorite golfers when he was a young, fresh faced superstar. My liking of him has gone down significantly with his whining and inability to believe in himself, but it's going back with what seems to be newfound maturity and confidence. I do think if he keeps losing to The Soulless Robots Of Nike, he might fall back into a funk. First it was Tiger kicking his ass, now Rory? What is this nonsense?!

The whining seems to be non-existent this year and he actually looks like he enjoys the game again. I want him to win a major now, I couldn't say that a few years ago.

Not sure if I'd call Rory soulless.

It's kinda unfortunate for the woman that it was found. Sergio would have probably not only replaced the diamond but gotten her a karat twice the size.

In all seriousness, it was a classy move.....but I think any golfer would have done the same thing, with the exception of maybe Rory Sabbatini or Patrick Reed.

I think Rory Sabbatini might actually steal the ring. He reminds me of Grumpy the Dwarf.

I honestly could never not like Sergio. I think he's entertaining as hell, he's obviously a hell of a player, and these little acts like this show that he is a good guy at the end of the day. He has his moments and tantrums, but hell... a lot of us do.

And yet he has gone out of his way to do things for and be supportive of our troops - soldiers of a country he is not even a citizen of.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Just cause he has the dog tag thing and supports the troopś doesn't mean he's not an ass.

You're right.  People can be asses for a variety of reasons.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
