So I went to the local range and hit a small bucket off the mats.  I hit most of my irons, driver, 3 wood and hybrid.  The 6 iron was my last club I hit and after 2 shots that sounded weird, I looked at the club and saw this.  There wasn't anything that I noticed on the balls when I hit them and it wasn't like I was hitting off concrete or anything.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this and any advice on what I should do?  I am thinking of going back to the store and seeing if they can help contact the manufacturer

I was all prepared to say "oh, that's just bag chatter" when I read the title, but ouch, that's a legitimate chip. Definitely talk to the manufacturer. I was going to ask you if there were any rocks in the mat, but my guess is that a dent that big would have to be made by a rock that's stationary (y'know, stuck into the ground, not a little pebble that would fly away), which I assumed you would have noticed.

Yep, that's not right. Bare spot or hole in that mat?

I would have noticed a rock or something stationary because this was the last of my shots.  you can see how many balls are left from a medium size bucket.  Where the ball is on the mat is where I always hit from

Definitely should get that replaced if you can, that nick looks like it might effect how the clubs travels through rough and sand.

Might be there are pebbles embedded in the mat and are now stationary. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that stones can get stuck in a mat like that, right?

That's not the manufacturers fault. Forged irons are soft. If Mizuno had to replace an iron every time somebody clipped a rock they would be broke. Some accidents you just have to live with.

I agree, but some places might do an exchange if they were purchased in the last few weeks.  I know Golfsmith offers some sort of no questions asked replacement program on clubs, but I don't know all the details of what it covers.

If they don't replace it, some websites will sell you single irons, even for recent models.

I would be surprised if golfsmith replaced things for cosmetic damage. I could only imagine buying a $400 driver and returning it the next day with a big ol pop up mark on the crown.

If forged irons are softer, they wouldn't break like that but indent more.  It may not be the manufacturers fault but it could be an issue with the forging process.

I wouldn't call it an accident, more unfortunate.

I can buy a new iron but I dont want to if I dont have to.  Needless to say, I will not be visiting that range ever again.  I showed it to them and they said there was no proof it happened at their location.  They were not very nice about it

I've played forged irons for years. The soil in my backyard also has a few rocks here and there. When I practice in my backyard I use a extra 7 iron I have because every so often I will get a mark exactly like the one you have pictured. That seven iron is pretty gnarly looking now, you really have got to give credit to the golf courses for having such high quality soil that you rarely will get a mark like that out on the course. Sorry to here about your club though. I suggested picking a new one up off of ebay and use the dinged one for practice in less than pristine conditions.

I would agree about the golf courses.  It is a crappy situation and I felt like the range could have been more sympathetic.  If I order a new 6 iron I can use that one for practice as you are describing

I don't think there's anything the store or manufacturer can do for you here, unless they go out of their way to make a customer happy, if you know what I mean.

This. Nobody could really fault either the retailer or Mizuno in this case as they have no way of knowing how the chip happened. Unfortunately, they cannot take the consumer's "word" on it because if they always did that, they'd be shipping out free equipment on a daily basis. This one falls on you, unfortunately, and I'm sure you both understand and expected that.

That is unusual, not normal wear and tear.

I would contact your retailer.

Check out that matt, too. That type of damage seems very unusual. I don't want to say the cause because anything would be a guess... and no use inciting MIzuno-ites. But Mizuno should take care of it. They may accuse you of dragging it across cement, but I'd think you'd see damage all the way across the leading edge if that was the cause.

Yeah sounds like the mat could be damaged or just bad quality. May have hit down or heavy and through the mat to the hard surface below. I don't see any heavy rubber edges or backing on it, does't appear to be range quality more like carpet.

I would think it would not be big enough to cause any issues??  Not sure though..

    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
