While I've posted a few times already, I figure it's time to identify myself (or just my golfing story):

I've played golf since I was 13.  I became a golfer at 38.

I grew up in northern Illinois and started playing golf at the age of 13.  I played quite often back then with my older brother (my #1 unspoken opponent) with a self-taught swing that would haunt me for decades.  We played quite often for the first couple of years before we moved to Georgia.  At the time we moved there, golf was cost-prohibitive to the general public and my playing drastically dropped.  By that time I was a mid-90's player.  I joined the AF in 1991 and played sporadically (couple years on/couple years off) until I finally got old enough that I "retired" from the more athletic sports (softball, basketball, volleyball, football, etc.).

I turned into a golfer in 2006 when I got an assignment to England.  While there I decided that I had played golf for 25 years and was not getting any better (~20 handicap).  Thus I decided to seek out some help and got a couple of lessons to try to develop something that might resemble a golf swing.  My first lesson was quite disheartening as I learned that almost nothing I was doing was right.  But I had a great teacher and within a couple of years my handicap was down to 14.  I luckily found my way into joining a competitive group who played matches against local English clubs and learned to enjoy the game in a whole new way.

Over the past few years I've spent a lot of time trying to learn more about a "fundamentally sound" swing and have had a tough journey trying to develop one.  I'm trying to be realistic and accept that there is nothing wrong with being a 10-12 handicap, but the current desire to break 80 is all consuming at this point.

I look forward to joining you all on the quest to be just one stroke better every round (and then one more...)
