Big Distance Gap Between My Sand and Lob Wedges

I have a 54 degree sand wedge which I hit 80 yards and a 60 degree lob wedge that I hit only 50 yards. What do I do for the in-between distances? I don't want to change the loft on my sandwedge. Should I decrease the loft on my lob wedge? Or, just choke down on my sand wedge?

You could also keep the 54 and get a 58.

I also play a 54 and 60 degree wedges. My 54 goes 100, and my 60 usually goes about 85 or so. I would suggest that maybe you should look at your swing with the 60. A 30 yd gap is rather big imho. Could be possible your flipping with the 60..?

Same swing both clubs, I think. What I failed to mention is that the sandwedge is a Ping blackeye, and my lob wedge is a Callaway Razr X.

I would check the loft to make sure the Callaway is actually 60 degrees. You could also bend it a degree stronger and see if that helps.

My bag already has one club too many and my playing partners have complained about it (just teasing, they say).

Are they the same wedge? If so you can always have your 60 bent down to a 58.

I checked the lofts at the golf store this afternoon, so the numbers I gave are correct. I don't think I'm flipping because I hit all my wedges equally well-- pure (sometimes). I just found the distances below on the website at http://www.leaderboard.com/LOFTINFO.htm These are the ranges for the average hitters on the PGA Tour. 4-Iron 210-220 9-Iron 140-155 5-Iron 195-205 Pitching Wedge 130-135 6-Iron 180-190 Gap Wedge (not used) 7-Iron 165-180 Sand Wedge 115-120 8-Iron 150-170 Lob Wedge 75-95 Note that the distance gaps between consecutive clubs are about 15 yards, down to the sand wedge, but when you get to the lob wedge, the gap is 40 yards! How can that be? That big gap is similar to what I have (30 yards between sand and lob, 10 yards everywhere else). Do others have similar huge gaps? Note added in edit: evidently, the solution is to add a 56-58 degree wedge to my bag.

I'm not a long hitter with my irons and I hit my 60* 80 yards and can hit it more. You must be increasing the loft somehow either by flipping or playing it forward. Make sure you have some forward lean on your shaft.

Gaps can range from 10-15 yards usually. Depends on the player and the clubs.

My best guess is, you are flipping. The sole on the lob wedge might cause you to glide underneath the ball more. Many things can influence how a wedge interacts on full shots.

I had a similar issue with my 48 going 100, 54 going 90 and 60 going about 60.  I almost never hit a full shot with the 60 and if I need to put it 80 out I would just move my grip down on one of the other clubs but because of a few situations I found myself in, I decided to learn to hit the full 60 to get the loft it can provide.

My fix was at address, putting my wrists more forward than usual until it looked like the bounce was taken out where the club hits the ground.  When I swing normally, it would force the ball strike to be closer to the bottom of the face rather than the top (which is what I suspected was the original problem).  If I hit the ball towards the top of the face, it would get such a crazy loft it was only going 60 yards or so.

Sorry if I didn't explain very well, its early here

I've recently started adjusting my ball position to more easily cover a wider range of distances with full swings on my wedges.  My biggest problem is actually between my Gap and Sand wedge (about 20-25 yards).

Regular ball position, regular smooth swing, I have this:

UW:  120-125

SW:  100-105

LW:   75-80

I learned that if I put the ball back in my stance and give it a little extra, I can add 5-10 yards to the Sw and LW.  So, if I'm 115 out, for example, and the worse trouble is long, then I'll take the SW, ball back a bit and try to nuke it.  Same distance, but front pin, then I'll choke up on a UW, ball forward, and swing "easy."

Or, you could just add more wedges in there, but that seems like it would confuse things too much. :)

The problem I have with lofted clubs and distance control is where the ball comes of the face. Fluffy lies present the biggest challenge.

I've been hitting my wedges fat lately for some reason, costing me about 10 yards each. I've just been pitching long irons while I figure it out.

1. More weight forward at impact

2. Make sure your head isn't moving around too much in the swing

3. Get the hands ahead of the ball at impact

Thank you! I'll focus on that on the range next time.

Agreed. I have to be really careful with a ball that's sitting up high in the rough. I almost prefer to have it sitting down in the junk so I can muscle it.

    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
