I've been Playing Golf for:​ 14 months

My current handicap index or average score is: 80-90

My typical ball flight is: Fade/Straight

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Hard Pull

 


 

Videos: Here a few videos.. I have never taken lessons and often play by myself so I haven't had too much feedback on my swing. I have just been tweaking it through trial and error. I am getting a better feel for what paths produce different shots etc. The first time I played golf was 10 years ago, but I only played once or twice a year until 2013. I played a fair bit in 2013 and a lot so far in 2014. I have a high elbow and a bit of an out to in swing. I usually shoot 40-44 on my local 9 hole course. Thanks for any advice or tips.

Yep, I agree with @billchao

 

 

Take a look through this thread. I would recommend getting into a bit more relaxed posture. Get your head looking down at the ball more.

Your first piece should be working on letting that right hip rotate sooner in the backswing. Check out the video posted in @billchao's above. 

 

Here is another one to illustrate that same concept, 

 

 

 

Keeping the back knee flex is causing you to sway to the right in the backswing, and robbing you of power and timing.

I would add this thread below.  You are very flexible, but you could shorten your swing a bit and still have a very long swing.

Thanks for the comments everyone. So I am trying to torque my top half too much over my lower half? I know that a bit of hip movement is natural, but it is a bit new to me to have that much of a hip turn as I see in the video. I don't know if it is the camera angle, but in the video you shared it looks to be a huge opening of the hips in the backswing, like 75 degrees. Although my swing looks nothing like it, I admire Adam Scott's swing as many people do, and I am just not seeing that level of hip turn.


  I never really noticed myself moving to the right on the backswing until I watched the videos. Any tips to avoid the backwards sway?  I am working on shortening my swing as I do need to get slightly more compact. Thanks for the tips so far everyone.

You have almost zero hip turn going back (like 10°, really, but practically none). It looks like you're just lifting the club straight up. You don't get enough shoulder turn, either, due to the lack of hip turn. What ends up happening is that you lift your arms more, and your elbows start to break down to get you "to the top."

 

Your hip movement actually looks alright in the early stages of the downswing, but because they weren't turned as much as they should have been, they have a head start on your shoulders/arms, so you end up with some separation which causes you to dump your wrist angles early (casting or losing lag).

 

The hip restriction is hurting your swing, and so is keeping your right knee flexed, as @saevel25 said. The backwards sway is partially caused by that. Here are some relevant threads on these subjects:

Thanks for the tips and threads. I am having trouble knowing what this feels like, but hopefully when I get back out on the course next week and I can try to address it. I'll try to update the thread in a few weeks when I can get my brother to come with me and take a video.

One feel I use is my right side is stretching up as much as possible from the right hip, side and shoulders.  Practice the takeaway like this.  Feel like they all all stretching to the max while the right arm is trying to straighten.  Look in a mirror if you can while you do this.
