Bounce Preference On A Sandwedge

There is a multitude of choices when it comes to bounce. What should you use for everyday as opposed to tight cut fairways?

For a nice fluffy sand, I like at least 10 degrees of bounce. For compacted "sand", I like 6 degrees or less of bounce.

The bounce number doesn't tell the entire story -- look at the width of the sole and the heel, toe, trailing edge relief.

In fact, the bounce number generally tells very little about the wedge.

As much as I can get.

Mine has 14*, and I'd take more if Vokey offered it...

Club designer Ralph Maltby addresses bounce details in this link. Among other things, he explains the difference between rated bounce and effective bounce:

There's a lot more to it than that. And less than six degrees? I wouldn't mind if my 6-iron had more than six degrees of bounce.

You really love the Maltby stuff, John. There's more out there than what he has to say… :-)

My Edel sand wedge has 17° of bounce. My 60° club has 21° or so. But, it's cambered well, with heel and toe relief, and I can hit shots off hardpan using the bounce.

In fact…

Pitch from Hardpan (Click to show)

That's the 60° club with a LOT of "bounce."

I sometimes use a zero bounce 52* wedge for wet, compacted sand, and other tight lies. Like my other clubs, it is a tool, that comes in handy every so often.
