3Hybrid or 3 wood?

Should I get a 3 hybrid or a 3 wood...I struggle to get air under my wood shots. Is a hybrid easier to hit and get under? And how big is the difference in distance?

What distance are you trying to add? 3 hybrid and 3 wood won't automatically get you the distances you want. You will be surprised what a 5 wood will get you and better accuracy.

Yes, a hybrid tends to be easier to hit off the deck than a 3-wood, but it sounds to me like your problem isn't the club as much as your swing.

You don't "get under" either club.  The hybrid is struck much like an iron with a descending angle of attack and although the 3-wood is more of a sweeping swing, the biggest mistake less experienced golfers make is to try to "get under it" and help the ball up into the air and that leads to fat or thin shots.

But again, yes, you should find a hybrid easier to hit.  My 15* 3-wood carry is about 20 yards longer than my 18* hybrid, and it will tend to roll out a little whereas the hybrid flies higher and tends to land pretty softly.  But if you're really uncomfortable with the 3-wood, the difference in distance between a well-struck 3-wood and a well-struck hybrid is unimportant, since you hardly ever strike the 3-wood well.  You'll likely do better with the hybrid for now.

Those two clubs aren't mutually exclusive. They're not even really good substitutes for each other. 3 hybrids are usually around 19 degrees, which is more 5 wood territory.

Pretty much. I have a 19 degree 3 hybrid that is about a club more than my 4 iron. It would probably be half a club more than a 3 iron. This is way less than my 3-wood.

A standard 3W has about 15* of loft, while a 3H often varies from 19-21* loft. Also, a 3W will have a longer shaft - and stronger loft - than 3H, which is why a well hit 3W goes farther.

As David suggested, you may need a swing adjustment.  Consider taking a lesson to see if that's the problem.

After you work on the lesson tips, compare a 3W to a 4W. Golf tests indicate that the average player can hit a 4W better - and sometimes farther - than a 3W. A little extra loft really helps.

These clubs are not comparable..................A 2 or 3-hybrid should be considered an alternative to a  5-wood.   When you say...."get under", it makes me cringe a bit.   This makes me think you are trying to hit-up on the ball which is a big no-no.

Distance isn't the problem. My main problem was most my wood shots was just getting on top of the ball. Watched some youtube instruction last night and found a 2009 cleveland launcher 3 wood for 35 dollars at local golf store. Magic happened and have no problem hitting it, went to the range and hit the 3wood better than I have in my life. So guess problem solved.

Good to hear jball. Some clubs just feel right with your swing.
