My fiance and I have been going to a local par-three course and we both seem to take a different approach. Most of the holes are pretty short (around 100 yards). She likes to hit off the tee (generally with a hybrid). I like to hit off the ground with an iron because I do a hell of a lot better. There are tees scattered about so it seems like lots of people use them. I find that I generally only prefer to use a tee with a wood, and occasionally a hybrid. Depending on how short or long a par three is it could require a different club, and of course you would have the option to use a tee. So when do you use a tee? Do you ever hit straight off the ground even when you have the choice to use a tee?

Using a tee will always give you a perfect lie. Now who doesn't want that? Seriously, I always use a tee and with the irons I will take a divot. The tee just insures the best possible contact without interference.

I guess my main issue is that I'm used to hitting low...you generally hit irons right off the fairway. For some reason I just can't hit it properly off of a tee, yet I hit it gorgeously right off the ground. Should I learn to play it off a tee? Any tips? Should I have the ball lower than if I was setting it up for my driver?

With an iron shot, the top of the tee is almost flush with the ground just enough to elevate it ever so slightly. With the driver you have it hovering inches above the ground, so there is a difference. With the tee you will get a cleaner lie every time.

In your case, I would NOT use a tee. I would lay it on the grass and use it as practice for my 100 yard shots from the fairway or ruff. I take my son to a 9 hole just like that and I only bring my Lob wedge and putter.

But if I'm playing a round of 18 on a 72 par course, then I will use a tee for all my par 3's.

So I didn't fall in to any of the poll questions.

I have a lot of respect for Lee Trevino and one of the things that he said that always remained with me was,"I tee it up at every opportunity, if I could tee it up in the fairway I would." While I don't tee it up in the fairway, on the tee box; pitching wedge or driver, I tee it up.

Just makes it a little easier to strike the ball well if you tee it up.

Well that's the problem, it seems to be the exact opposite for me.

There's a simple answer then: don't tee it up for irons. I find I hit it at least as well when I have a tee as compared to not having a tee. If you find you don't hit it as well off a tee, don't use a tee.

When the Pebble Beach tournament was on, the LIVE AT coverage was for a short par-3. I think it was 107 yards for the pros' tees. I saw some guys just drop their balls on the tee ground: I wish I had written down who. Jack and Lee used to comment about how you should 'always' tee it up given a chance to give yourself a perfect lie. For most golfers, I'd say this is good advice. But just as you wouldn't use Jack or Lee's prescription glasses, you shouldn't use this piece of their advice when you find the exact opposite works for you.

You tee the ball lower with the shorter clubs. But any pro will always recommend using a tee. Why would you not take every opportunity to give yourself a perfect lie? If you need the ball low, then tee it low, so the bottom of the ball is right at the top of the grass... it's still a better lie than sitting all the way down.

I tee every shot that I'm allowed to. I tee my driver lower than most of my friends, about 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 inches above the grass. I tee my 5W and hybrids no more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the grass, and my irons right at grass level.

I almost always tee up even if it is to raise the ball 1mm above the ground. I'm not confident with woods, so I generally take a 3i from the long tees but sometimes take a 18* rescue on the longest holes.

Shadow, it sounds like you are teeing it too high. Like others have said, tee it so it's at grass level, but sitting up, ever so slightly. But, bottom line is to do what works best for you - if you like to hit it off the ground, then by all means do so.

I thought I was keeping it pretty low but since the overwhelming majority (including pros) seem to find teeing up the correct way, I'm just going to have to figure it out. I will try it much lower next time I go.

I have trouble getting a ball to check up when hit off a tee. I feel Like i can really drive it into the ground with an iron producing more backspin. something I cant do with a tee. If the teeing ground isnt great I do like other suggestions and tee it up so basically the tee head is on the ground and the ball sitting 1-2mm up. Other than that its hybrids and driver for me with the tee.

Driving it into the ground does NOT impart backspin. That may be what it feels like you are doing, but if you really were, you'd be topping the ball and that I very much doubt. To impart backspin you simply hit with a descending blow. The ball actually starts to rise immediately because of the loft of the club. The more cleanly you strike the ball, the more spin is imparted. The easiest way to hit the ball cleanly is to have a perfect lie. Putting the ball on a tee is the best way I know to achieve a perfect lie.

The reason some people have trouble hitting the ball well off a tee is because they change their stroke... usually they unconsciously try to scoop it instead of making a normal descending blow. I can tee it up 1/4" and still take the same small divot that I do from a normal fairway lie. And I can spin the bejeebers out of it when I actually make a good, crisp stroke.

Who cares what a pro would do. The guy says he hits it beautifully off the ground. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Besides when you pick a spot on the tee box you are generally not picking a divot to place the ball in.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
