Hello fellow golfers

I am new to this forum and this is my first post.

I am a senior golfer age 65. I just took up golf again this year after having giving it up for the last 8 years or so. I previous gave up golf because my game was horrible. But after have received a few lessons this spring combined with lots of practice my game has improved quite substancially. So much so that I have knocked 10-12 stokes off what I use to play before I gave up golf.

Especially of Interest (at least to me is what follows)

I recently bought a used Wilson Wild Thing 9 Wood which has a 26 degree loft. Since I can't hit normal drivers very well, I have found that  I can usually hit this Wild Thing driver an unbelievable 190 - 210 yards if I make good contact and put extra effort into my swing to increase club speed to the best I can figure, around 100 MPH or so. And what's really important is that I have noticed that I usually hit the ball straight with this driver.

I can believe the distance I have been able to drive with this club. This Wilson Wild Thing 9 wood has now become my long distance driver

Wow, that's a heckuva swing speed for a relatively short-shafted club! Welcome to the site!

Welcome! I will echo @David in FL in that that's some impressive speed with the relatively short club. Have you tried hitting a driver recently? I suspect that if you are swinging better than ever you might have success with the driver of you try it out again

Yes, I have recently tried my driver as well as my 3 wood. I usually slice my driver big time and don't get any longer or straighter drive with my 3 wood than I do when I use the Wild Thing with the 26 degree loft which I hit straight. However, I will probably have to revert back to my 3 wood on windy days.

The proof that the numbers add up is that when I tee off with Wild Thing and the green is 205 yards away, I am able to reach the green with my drive with this club. I am just as surprised at the numbers as you are

Just curious.  Are you measuring that with a laser?  Yardages on par-3's are generally measured to the center of the green from a marked location on the tee.  "Reaching the green", could easily only mean a carry of 170ish yards or so depending on where the tees are actually located and what part of the green you hit.

Not doubting you, just an observation.  210 is a full-on 3 hybrid for me......maybe with a little helping wind. :8)

Don't lose that club!  I definitely can't hit a 9wood 200 yards.

One thing tho - if you're slicing your driver "big time" keep trying to work that out on the range and get to where you don't slice it.  In my own experience with my own swing - hitting a big slice with the driver is indicative of swing issues that effect all your clubs.  I used to slice my driver big time but I didn't think I was slicing my 7 iron . . .but I was.  It was obvious from the trajectory, high and weak - not necessarily a huge amount of left to right movement.

You are probably correct when you say that the yardage is measured to the center of the green. however my ball usually lands off to the right or left of the green and ends up lined up with the center of the green. Secondly due to the high loft on shots with this club combined with landing it the high grass, I notice the ball either sits or gets hardly any roll. My guess would be, that if I hit the green on the drive I would get a bit of roll probably to the back edge of the green.

9wood has found his Heavenwood.

Now, like any true golf junkie, he must place a longer shaft on that stick... more yardage, more speed, more ... more ... more

I did a bit of research and discovered that the 26 degree angle of loft on my Wild Thing 9 wood has the same angle of loft as some of the 7 woods, so that probably needs to be taken into consideration.

Hello Mr. Desmond

Nice to meet you as well as the other golf addicts in this forum.

I would love to be able to hit a driver straight. I even bought a new Taylor Made Rocket Ballz Stage 2 driver regular shaft earlier this year. The only way I can hit the fairway with this driver is to slow my club speed down, and then I only get 170 180 yards with it. Whenever I try to increase the club speed using the driver the ball slices every time. The more club speed I add the bigger the slice. That's why I currently prefer my 9 wood with it's 26 degree angle of loft which is the angle of loft found on many 7 woods. I also have a 5 wood with a 22 angle of loft which might replace the 9 wood when driving into the wind.

Crush em and drive em straight

You can do it.  I was the most ridiculous slicer on the planet.  It took me about 3 years of sporadic lessons and some dedicated practice but I got rid of mine.  One thing I learned in that process is that I do not, ever, ever try to add club speed by swinging harder.  If I want to add club speed I make a bigger turn and try to keep my arms nice and high in the back swing (my own tendency is to have them too low).  When I actually do this the feel I have is of swinging even slower . .except at the bottom of the arc where it feels really fast.

Oh, I'm not stating, "build a driver" ... but a junkie wonders if you can take that 26 deg wood and pair it up with another inch of shaft length with work done by a competent club maker. But there is also the other side saying "if it's not broke ..."

How do you hit that 5-wood? That's sounds like it might be a great answer. Plenty of loft and a little more shaft. With your swing speed I'd think that would be an easy 220+ club.....?

When I built my fairways I toyed with different shafts to get them exactly as I wanted. To me they are the "wedges" of the long end of the bag. As much as trying to dial in distances and close gaps I wanted specific launch characteristics and head designs based on the conditions I play in. I don't use a 9w but my 7w is what replaced my 4i/4h. Use it from the tee here and there but it's mostly a rescue club and something to hit it high and land soft on longer par 3's. All the courses I play have at least a couple in the 190-220 range and a few play uphill.

But I definitely see the allure. I've been trying to get my similar aged parents to think outside the box with equipment. As they get older they really don't have the speed and fitness to play golf using driver on every hole. Once they get in past their 4h unless it's a very good strike there isn't much distance difference between the hybrid and driver but accuracy and forgiveness suffers. They don't hit many GIR so unless they move way up it's 3 to the green anyway. May as well keep it in play and try to get up and down.

Dave :-)

    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
