How long does is truly take?

To start to "groove" a good golfswing in your guys opinion? Ive been at it for a year and I finally feel like I am starting to make a little progress. When I got to the range and his a bucket of 50, my breakdown falls into something like this:

30 Solid Shots. Correct contact

10 OK. Not perfectly square but definitely playable

5-10 shanks. Usually the week push shot to the right variety off the hosel or very inside of the club.

The shanks discourage me but Ive gotten better at stepping away and taking a breath and not getting pissed off that it happened. The shanks usually start when I change clubs on the range and go from like a 7 iron to a 4 iron. I believe the issue is I come too far inside and try to hit the ball harder when the clubs get bigger instead of putting the same easy swing on it. I hit my wedges and short irons well consistently now..

Just curious as to when it really felt like to each of you when you had your swing grooved.....

Been researching a few online golf programs . One popular program told me 3 years ( 1st year no golf ball all isometric and muscle memory ) . Very expensive. , but guys look great in that program . I'm super interested in it and might take the plunge

Search Evolvr on this site and PM @iacas or @mvmac for more info. Don't sign up for some crap program where you don't even get to hit a ball for a year. That's asinine and no fun at all.

No shot at doing that Ernest. I cant not hit a ball for a year. Im too far along. Ive been seeing a pro for a few months.

I currently shoot low 100s and best round to date 98 on a good course

Definitely give Evolvr a try. Just google it. It's something like $40 a month and you can do up to 4 lessons per month. In my experience two per month is perfect, you NEED to practice the material. I have no idea who your current pro is but I would still bet dollars to donuts that the Evolvr guys are better.

How long it is going to take for you isn't something anyone can really answer, way too many variables. It doesn't sound like you are doing so badly really, if you are hitting 80% pretty well and shooting around 100. That's what I have heard the "average" golfer shoots. But you wouldn't be on forums like this if all you wanted was to be average. For me, the weak little shank-like thing comes from not getting my weight shifted back left, sometimes while trying a bit too hard to hold my wrist hinge. Fortunately that seems to happen on the range where I think about such stuff. But grooving my swing has had a lot to do with grooving my weight shift. I think a lot of feeling like you have got your swing working okay is reflected in how you score on the course, and when you are shooting around 100 it is time to really evaluate where you are losing strokes. I saw Lowest Score Wins plugged earlier, I haven't read it yet, but it is written by this forum's administrator who seems quite knowledgable. Probably a worthwhile read to shave strokes, but here are a few thoughts that have helped me. You drive is really important, it sets the tone for the rest of the hole. It you can hit 300 yard drives it is great, so long as they end up in a halfway decent place. But if you lose balls in the woods/weeds/water or OB very often you might be better off dialing it back to 260 and in the fairway or easy rough. When you do find you have hit a poor shot and you are in trouble don't try to make up for it by hoping to make a followup shot that would make Tiger grin and spin his club. You aren't Tiger. When you find yourself in trouble make sure your NEXT shot isn't from trouble! Over time you will save strokes. Finally work on ptiching and putting. A lot of strokes can be saved in this area by most average golfers. Search "qiuckie pitching video" on this forum to see an excellent technique.

A whole year of Evolvr will run you under $500. And I don't give a rats ass what I "look" like, I just wasn't to hit the ball better.

Do yourself a favour and look into Evolvr, probably perfect for you. You won't find a better deal on that quality of instruction. Type "5sk video thread" in the search bar of this site to get an idea of what and how they teach.

It takes years I'm afraid. For all of us.

I had a quite nice swing from my childhood but I recently began again. It took me 3 years to start hitting it out of the center of the face. This is all that matters.

Agree 100% with EJ. The instruction with evolvr is the better than every single instructor I've had in person lesson with any A LOT cheaper. 30 mins with a local pro may set you back $70 so I would say you owe it to yourself to give evolvr a shot for 2 months and see how you get on.

I would recommend the evolvr if only because it definitely motivates you to video and look at your swing (plus you get a lesson to boot!).

As for how long it took me to make solid contact consistently, it was three years of work starting freshman year and starting to really see the benefits my junior year. I started out hitting it thin and fat all over the place, and now (four years later) I will hit probably 30 balls I consider to be solid hits, 10 balls I consider to be absolutely pure, and maybe another 10 or so that might be just a little bit thin. I rarely hit it fat anymore, because I learned that erring on the side of thin will make my misses end up closer to the hole.

It took me 5 years to get to a single digit hdcp. That was starting from scratch, reading a few books, playing, and practicing a lot. I think I only took a total of 8 hours of lessons during that 5 years from instructors. 7 hours of that instruction was pretty much a waste of time.

The other part of learning to play golf, is that some people, no matter what they do, or who they take lessons from can only get so good.

Sounds like you're doing okay, but sometimes the results can be a bit misleading. For instance if you think you hit a good shot, but hit the toe or heel to do it then it was a good result of a bad strike. I've been through this phase several times, and I know how frustrating it can be. It takes a huge amount of effort to get from 60% good shots to 90%. Try out evolvr or 5SK, they can help you progress faster. It has worked pretty well for me, so far.
