Anyone here have the new Apple iMac? If so what are your thoughts on it.

I've always had a mac. Great machines. The last one I bought was the iMac 17" wide back in 2002. Biggest problems I've had with Mac's was compatibility. If you are good with computers these compatibility issues can be resolved with some work. I am not sure of the newer iMacs, but I hear they are becoming more compatible.

Define "compatibility"... because I'm not sure what you mean with the new ones being "more" compatible than the old ones.

I have a PowerBook from January, 2003 and a Mac Pro from last October that are both as "compatible" as any Mac I've owned, which is quite compatible. The newest version of iWork includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, so if you want to replace Word, PowerPoint, and Excel you can now - Numbers was just added this year. Anyway, back to the original topic: Macs are great. Additionally, ask me about some discounts I can get you on the two pieces of software from cynicalpeak.com .

I gather that with the introduction of the Intel line of chips, gbk is refering to the ability to run Parallels, VMWare Fusion, or Boot Camp to run "Windows.

I use both Parallels and Boot Camp, and iff you really need a windows app, you got it. The new iMacs look incredible. If I didn't already own a G5, I would probably get one!!

I'm extremely biased (Mac Developer/Sys Admin, in addition to holding almost every Apple Cert that exists), but I could not recommend a Mac any more!

We have one next door in the Computer Showcase. I have played around with it for a while. What a great machine! You can't beat the form factor. I think you will love it. Although I am not a big fan of Apple mice, even the newest one. I would get a good Logitech mouse.

Other then that, what's not to love? OS X and Windows on the same machine? Great looks? A space saving machine? I don't see the downside

better serve the casual reader if you were to elucidate your reasons, rather than simply denounce a product out of hand. For myself, I have had nothing to fault with my Macs since I switched years ago. Reliability has been good, security is good, as has performance and general product satisfaction.... From the server side I cannot comment since I am simply a home user of Macs )and our institution is PC centric).

True enough, but aside from what was posted my previous responders I have little to add that would be releveant to casual readers as the majority of my love of the system is for enterprise/development reasons.

I think he was saying he cannot recommend them

any more than what's already been recommended, not that he can no longer recommend them. You know what I mean? In other words, I think he likes Macs, and continues to recommend them, but slipped up in how he worded it.

Yes well I just recently bought the 24" iMac. A friend and I decided about 4 months ago that we were sick of the Microsoft BS... so we decided to get macs. He bought a MacBook back in May. I recently saved up enough for the 2.8 ghz model with 2 gb of ram. My only complain is with garage band. They didn't include any jam packs in iLife '08.

Compatability

I had a 128K Mac from 1985, a Powerbook from 1993 and now the iMac 17" from 2000. In the beginning of course there were some issues with software and Microsoft, but there were always conversion programs. Later when the Internet evolved and became more well used many of the web sites did not work well with the Mac, but after some tinkering you could get them to work properly. More recently, with the popularity of Active X, many web sites that use Active X give me problems from time to time. I realize I am using a 7 year old MAC with some of the older software, but I believe that many of the issues I mentioned above are becomming less and less prevelant. All in all, I have used MACs since 1985 and have always loved them. Pre 1985 I had an Atari 400 that I hooked up to the TV and a tape casset to store my programs! I guess I am really aging myself.

MY apologies! It was indeed the wording - was it a "dangling participle" that threw me? (grammar was never a hit with me) I scratched my head a bit actually when I read your post, as it seemed you were deeply involved with them - but then again, I know many windows admins that would dump windows in a second... So I didn't immediately assume a positive vote for the Mac platform.

macs are incredible. ive been using them since i was four years old. ive never found compatability to be a problem but i dont know if thats cos im used to how macs work or ive just never struggled. where i work i use windows which i hate but if i ever need to do work at home n i cnt use the mac i use parallels on my mac. we used windows machines at school as well n i hated it. i would recommend macs anytime but it reli depends on what ur used to i guess.

I recently bought a MacBook (2007 version) and I love it. Also I haven't had any compatibility problems.

Upgraded a powerbook 5 months ago with a macbook

Battery went, keyboard broke, bluetooth never worked

One phone call and apple sorted it for free

So add excellent customer service to the list of positives! problems are to be expected from the 1st gen intel chip based macs i suppose!
