Some new rules in the NHL this year…

1.8 - Goalkeeper's Trapezoid

Trapezoid expanded by two feet on each side of the net.

23 - Game Misconducts

New category. Basically a bunch of stuff moves into the same category as boarding and checking from behind, resulting in suspensions of a game if you get two such misconducts.

24 - Penalty Shots

No more "Spin-o-rama" moves.

38 - Video Goal Judge

Video review expanded. Kicked in goals have a new, much higher bar.

57 - Tripping

It no longer matters if you touch the puck first when you dive. The chances of penalty shots are reduced too if the player does touch the puck first - now it's just the two-minute penalty.

64 - Diving

Supplemental fines for incidents. Coaches are fined too. Look out Claude Julien.

76 - Faceoffs

After an icing, you can no longer put a goon in to get kicked out. Two violations (the same player stays in the face-off) result in a delay of game penalty. The first violation is a warning.

84 - Overtime

Teams switch ends now, the ice is dry scraped, and coaches don't have to submit three names for a shootout.

85 - Puck OB

Will now be played as stroke and distance.

85 - Puck Out of Bounds

For real this time… Teams that take a shot on goal and have the puck go OB are not penalized by having the face-off out of the zone. Shots that break the glass, go off the side of the net, off the dasher or glass, tipped or deflected, or wedged in the goal.

1.9 - Rink

The hash marks are moving from 3' to 5'7" apart as in international rinks.

I like them, particularly the puck OB, the face-off stuff, and the tripping stuff. Good changes.

Yea, sure now that Marty is irrelevant ;-)

I like this. A lot of the infractions cited here are of the "personal foul" type. There's a difference between playing hard hitting hockey and just being a goon.

24 - Penalty Shots

No more "Spin-o-rama" moves.

I really like this.

38 - Video Goal Judge

This is one of those rules that sounds good on paper, but I'll reserve judgement until I start seeing how they actually call it.

57 - Tripping

It no longer matters if you touch the puck first when you dive. The chances of penalty shots are reduced too if the player does touch the puck first - now it's just the two-minute penalty.

At first, I didn't like this. Then I realized the rule specifically refers to tripping an opposing player with a body part, which means a defender should still be able to knock the puck out and trip a player with the follow through action of the stick, which I'm fine with. If you're tripping someone with a body part while diving, you were close enough that you probably could have done something else to defend against the breakaway, so it seems like the NHL closed a bit of a loophole.

64 - Diving

Supplemental fines for incidents. Coaches are fined too. Look out Claude Julien.

I think they could have gone further with this. I'd really like to see the opposing player's infraction waved off in the event of a diving call, or a game misconduct, or something that might actually affect a player's decision to embellish.

76 - Faceoffs

After an icing, you can no longer put a goon in to get kicked out. Two violations (the same player stays in the face-off) result in a delay of game penalty. The first violation is a warning.

What exactly would this affect?

Why don't they just replace the shootout with drawing of straws or Rock-Paper-Scissors...

This is why I pretty much quit watching hockey.  They just can't stop trying to tweak the rules.

Really? Every sport changes the rules now and then. The NFL just changed their overtime rules quite dramatically, for example.

It'd be like the MLB saying "No stealing in extra innings." or the NBA saying "No fade aways in OT!"

I don't mind changes that enhance the game, but removing the spin move doesn't do that.  They finally did something about the ridiculous goalie leg pads last season.  When they'd butterfly it was like someone pushed two over-sized sofas in front of the net :p

Spin-o-rama moves are illegal in all penalty shot situations. Not just in shootouts.
