Recently i had a chance to play on a practice green featuring two 15 inch cups. Without doubt it was not as easy as i had thought, I went up and hit the ball without reading the line, or speed; and proceeded to miss it right and short.

However this article isn't about how my putting went with it, rather how my chipping went with it. Again i thought it would be easier with this large cup to make them in, and i was making more than usual but a thought dawned on me, rather than try to incorporate these oversize cups into golf, and onto regular golf greens, why not put them in front or beside existing greens, and the objective be to chip the ball in from the fairway.

This will allow an experienced player the ability to play a regular green without the distraction of a huge hole in it, while also allowing the beginner in his foursome to play a game golf without putting, and the complex and time consuming procedures that go with it. And the player who just wants to go out and hit golf balls can do just that, again without putting.

My second thought is on promoting stable-ford formatting for daily play. This will increase time of the rounds through only allowing a single or a double bogey, as compared to putting it in the hole.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.

It is my experience that my early frustrations with playing golf were about all of my mishits before getting on the green.. once I was able to get on the green it was a relief as I knew I could always get it in with 2 or 3 attempts.. it is the 5-7 attempts to get on the green that always frustrated me the most, and I bet they frustrate golfers just as much now.

Is there a way to make that part of the game easier?  I'm not really sure if there is.. bigger golf balls?  Bigger clubs?  different shape clubs?  It is this that the people interested in growing the game need to think about!  IMO

try playing from a forward set of tees once or twice, we often put too much importance on the length of drive. See if the game is more enjoyable, you can always move back to the longer tees as your game develops. Regarding the fairway chipping area near a green, as long as its out of harms way from the golfing public

I wouldn't say equipment is the issue.

I played on a course the other day that had a left over, 2' diameter circle made out of chalk dust around the pin. I asked about it. It was for a previous tournament, where if the ball finished inside the circle, that was considered a hole out. To me this idea seemed much more effective than another, larger hole, some where else on the green.

As posted above I too think most strokes are lost before getting on the green. When used correctly, the "equitable stroke control" (esc) limits the number of strokes on a hole based on the golfer's playing ability. Perhaps an  esc number could be established before getting on the green. Say the number 3. If the golfer is not on the green in 3 strokes, they would pick up their ball, add a penalty stroke, and place the ball on the green in a predetermined spot, and putt out from there. :surrender:

Interesting thought Patch,

My only thought about that is that very few golfers keep and maintain a handicap ( believe i heard somewhere that only 10% of golfers do) , which is why i thought to mention stable ford as well.

Since you can pickup up after bogey ( or whatever you set it at) it could speed up round times, their would be less frustration as you wouldn't have to sit there and write down a ten on those two blow-up holes.

Any thoughts on promoting stable ford formatting?

I don't know about the picking up the ball thing. When the ball doesn't finish in the hole, it feels like a total failure to me. I'm a recent-enough golfer that picking up the ball has happened to me in this year. The fact that it would come earlier in the sequence would not have made me feel better about it.

As a relatively new golfer who suffers his share of blow up holes, I would say that maybe a Stableford type system where I ratchet down the point where I pick up. To me a double bogey is like a bogey, and I am still enjoying the hole at that point, but a triple or worse and the fun goes away.  But it comes back to the point that improvement is not going to show up if your improvement is reducing blow up holes. And sorry, I am not going to pick up solely to clear the hole for some speed golfer zooming down the fairway. They can play through the next tee. I just don't see an alternative to honest score for anybody trying to improve.

Big cups might be fun, I guess, but I like playing golf.

I dont like to pick up at a predetermined score, I then miss out of practicing my putting. I do however pick up from distances that I dont feel I need to practice from

Kind of along the same line of thinking, is strict adherence to the rules. The guys who started me on golf to begin with always used 1 mulligan per nine as a rule and an extra tee shot on number one if desired. They also used liberal drop rules. I've started to play as close to the rules as I can this year and it's been a struggle to properly evaluate my progress as a result. If someone is really looking to improve as a golfer, I think they've got to do it the hard way.

Rather than making golf easier, may I suggest that you try to get better? ;-)

I love golf the way it is currently played. I agree with Jack Nicklaus, national spokesperson for Tee It Forward, "Golf is a game that should be fun to play, but many golfers make it far too hard by playing from distances that don’t match up to their abilities."

If I could advocate a change that would add to the growth of the game, it would be to change the number of holes to 12 instead of 18. I feel that more people would be willing to invest around 3 hours to play the game, rather than the current 4-5 hours. And, after your first 12 holes, if you wanted to play an additional six holes, that would be an option, too.

I don't know… you can choose to play nine holes at virtually any course nowadays.

I don't really understand the push for 12 holes. If I've played 9 I'm either done for the day or I'm looking to finish out the whole 18. 12 would just be ... awkward.

Playing devil's advocate:  OK, jamo, you've played 9 but it was real slow.  You want to play more--finish the round, but another 9 is going to go on forever.  Doesn't 12 holes sound pretty good about now?

If it's really that slow I'm probably not to keen on playing more than 9.

12 holes makes the rounds difficult to count for handicap purposes.  If I'm short on time, I can play the front nine one day and the back nine another and still submit my score for handicap.  Playing 12, I'd play 9 official holes and 3 practice holes?  Also unless courses are designed for 12 holes there will be a log jam on the front 12 and golfers finishing on 12 will have to drive back to the turn or drive past the last 6 holes to get back to the club house.

Seems like it creates more problems than it solves.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
