Signed up for the monthly scramble, now paired with 3 guys i never have met but see our team total HC sum about 110. Divide that by 8 and that is the team HC.  Impossible for us to win given the rules. Some teams have 1 or 2 women (huge advantage on some holes with forward tees), some teams have HC 7 players, and some teams have both those advantages. Only 3 drives per person needed and anyone can take 2nd shot.

Any advice besides 'enjoy the new friends', or 'cheat when possible' ? Just joking, would never do that. But this is for money and i hate to just piss it away.

Why do you divide by 8? Is it 50% HCP? I once played in a scramble with a guy who golfs once a year (36 HCP?) and a young woman who had never touched a club in her life but had a great body. The other person on the team failed to show, so the team decided I should hit two shots per hole. We finished 10 under and won the tourney. Nice having two shots every time. Pick the best. So hope someone doesn't show.

I have a scramble next week, you can't win unless you cheat. My family team has my mom 2 juniors and my dad. I can drive most holes from the Reds but only I have somewhat of a shortgame. Last year the winner shot 46. And they are all 10hdcps or worse.(gross tournament) even if I gathered abunch of my 1 hdcp friends I doubt we would shoot better that 63

Why not say something?  They should more equitably spread the skill level of players around the teams.

BTW...I rarely play scrambles, but played in one last week using a format I've never heard of before, but really liked the format.

If the team made a par or better they moved back a tee on the next hole.  Bogey or worse, move up a tee. We ended up shooting a 64 and placed 3rd (two 63s in front of us).  We played most of the round from the back tees, but had a long hitter which helped a lot.

Unfortunately you won by cheating although I don't believe it was malicious! You probably should have asked. By the rules each player, should take turns hitting 2nd shots ( ghost player) until holed out. if the fourth player is putting for par and makes it on the first try out of the 2 shots. their turn is over. #1 would have two shots off the tee on the next hole. It has to be a consistent order thru the entire round, not just by hole either.

I agree, that's how we do it in our league. I did ask in this tourney and they said for me to hit two shots. It was a drinking scramble. Cart girl came by with all the beer we could drink. The owner of the company sponsoring the tourney would make rounds serving Bloody Mary's and Screwdrivers. So he wasn't too concerned about golf. I've only shot below par a few times in my life. To finish -10 with that team I may have played my best round of golf ever. The girl who had never played got so drunk, that she had two accidents in her cart. Bloodied her hand and never felt it. Before she got drunk, she could bend over and put the tee in the ground without bending her knees. And she had on short, tight shorts. And long legs. I was going to take her "home" after the tourney, but one of her friends rescued her from my clutches. Talk about flashbacks! :-)

It gets better. She had just gone thru a divorce and was "looking for fun". We had guys from all over the course watching her place her tees. And she knew it. I know I wanted to gain some carnal knowledge. She was impressed with my golfing ability, but what did she know. She whiffed almost every shot. She was good at giving us a decent putt on the greens to show us the break. And yes, she marked her ball without bending her knees! And you know everybody in a scramble lines up behind the putter to see the line! :-D This was a vendor - customer scramble where the vendor was thanking all of his customers by sponsoring a scramble with $400 first place and lots of door prizes. The after golf banquet was prime rib. The young woman in our group was a sales person for the company. I was "supposedly" as customer. The guy who plays once a year was also a sales rep and wanted a decent golfer on his team, so he asked me. The course was Metro West in Orlando. Some of the Floridians here may have played it. Nice course with fast greens. Any course that posts a sign with the stimp on it, you know the greens are going to be fast.

Personally the idea of playing in a scramble for money just seems a little grotesque to me.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Money is good.

Gambling for it in a form of golf that is inherently corrupt is . . . . . . . . .  . . dumb.  IMO

I'm playing in a charity scramble Sunday. What would be some good strategies for play but also for use of string, which you can buy and move the ball that much closer. We have no chance to win (winner shot "46" or something last year) but would like to play well. Our team is made of me, 4 handicap that drive the ball 260, my mom who on a good strike hits it 170 but has no real strengths, my little brother who hits it 200 on a good strike, and has a tendency to make some long putts. We will be playing 4900 yards, and between my mom and brother, one of them usually hits a decent one per hole, then we have my fathe who rarely hits driver near the fairway but a few times a round will hit it 230-240. He is playing back at the men's tees and is a 20 ish handicap who hits a lot of decent shots and a lot of bad shots. I'm our biggest birdie maker and I usually make 1 per round. My last tournament was 36 holes, played great on the most difficult course I've played(including the ocean course) and I made 1 birdie, with only about 3 real chances

My recommendation is to write the charity a check for your part of the donation, then go play golf. ;-)

I love scrambles. I like shooting low. I don't know that I've been in one where I really thought someone cheated. Maybe I'm naïve. If I win money, it's a bonus.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
