Note- title is a quotation, not a comment!

I was linking to the Golf Talk podcast this week, when Eric and the others were talking about Boo Weekley being paired with Sergio again at one of the FedEx Cup events and again marking his card incorrectly. Eric then described Sergio as the title of this thread and said something along the lines that he wanted to see him get DQ'd every week.

OK, I get it that loads of you Americans hate Sergio, but you are letting yourselves down more than making any valid or sensible comment on Sergio. I am not his biggest fan - I was glad Paddy won the Open - but I can't think of any US player that gets the same bilious hatred that Sergio does. And it is not like some of them don't try.

As for Boo Weekley, great golfer for sure, but hardly able to string a coherent sentence together, and probably innumerate. But so what, you don't hear me calling him some of the names that beg to be used.

Back to Sergio. OK, he spat in the cup at Doral. That was plain wrong and he deserves any fine he gets for that. As does Tiger for spitting like a snake and as do many other golfers for thumping clubs, using language, whacking sprinkler heads at Bay Hill or whatever.

Sergio hasn't won a major. That gives him common ground with every single US golfer under 30. He made a bunch of excuses for failing to win the Open. I guess if any of you had led for 71 holes, you might be a bit upset and say something you shouldn't too.

So it must be the Ryder Cup, I guess.

As for the podcast, I want to hear informed interesting news and opinions. If I want to hear some guys just talking crap, I can do that down my local club.

You know, I have a gut feeling calling the guys on the podcasts ignorant little pigs is going to work real well...

As Eric and anyone who listened to the podcast will know, I was quoting his description of Sergio, not calling him or anybody else that. I object to Sergio being called it, so I would not call anybody that either. That should be obvious from reading the post.

Sergio was once my favorite golfer. I think Sergio's juvenile 'rub it in your face' behavior at the Ryder Cup is part of the reason I dislike him now. IMHO, I feel he's a poor sport who places blame elsewhere in order to explain his shortcomings. Sergio’s tasteless and inappropriate cup spitting incident is not analogous to Tiger’s. Tiger occasionally ejects saliva from his mouth to the grass. Sergio, on the other hand, made a statement that showed contempt for his own game that day, his fellow golfers, and the game of golf.

I called him an "ignorant little brat," not a "pig," I said "I'm all in favor of disqualifying him from anything," not "every week," and my name is not spelled "Eric."

If you're going to take an issue with something I've said, please try to quote me accurately.
OK, I get it that loads of you Americans hate Sergio,

I assure you my dislike for Sergio has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a U.S. citizen.

but I can't think of any US player that gets the same bilious hatred that Sergio does.

I can't think of any U.S. player who behaves as poorly as Sergio does.

Back to Sergio. OK, he spat in the cup at Doral. That was plain wrong and he deserves any fine he gets for that. As does Tiger for spitting like a snake...

We all spit on the tee, in the rough or fairway, etc. and comparing any player spitting randomly around the course to what Sergio did is dumb. They're not the same act, and what bothered me MORE about Sergio spitting is that he didn't think it was a big deal and tried to brush it aside as if it was nothing. It was incredibly disrespectful, and in saying "it's no big deal" repeatedly, it showed how he truly felt. That makes him "ignorant" - ignorant of the way he should behave, of golf's rich history of integrity, of common sense.

As to why he's a "little brat," well, that story and loads of others just queued themselves up for discussion.
So it must be the Ryder Cup, I guess.

Sorry, no. My dislike for Sergio is not an "us versus them" thing. I wish our guys would learn a lesson from how he plays in the Ryder Cup.

I respect Sergio's skills on the golf course immensely. I have little respect for him as a person.
As for the podcast, I want to hear informed interesting news and opinions. If I want to hear some guys just talking crap, I can do that down my local club.

Just because you disagree with our opinions doesn't mean we're not informed. And the opinions were interesting enough to you to post a forum topic on it, no?

Erik

Apologies for spelling your name incorrectly.

You did indeed refer to Sergio as an "ignorant little brat" rather than "ignorant little pig". I still maintain he gets a lot of abuse and criticism specifically from US fans (see Golfwrx for numerous examples), and I think that there is something rather nasty about it.

And we don't all spit on the tee.

He does. No denying that.

But the reason a lot of people abuse Sergio is because they probably feel there's something rather nasty about him.
And we don't all spit on the tee.

Even if we did (I don't spit much myself... unless I'm playing baseball

), it wouldn't be the same as Sergio's "incident."

I have to agree with the comments on the show. Sergio has acted like a child for far to long, and his boyish charm ended 4 yrs ago. It's time he carries himself like the adult he is or reap the backlash for his behavior. I know he is a ringer on the Euro squad in Ryder Cups but poor behavior is poor behavior. He has acted like a baby all season and he gets what he gets until he grows up.

Matt M, you said it perfectly....he could be adored by U.S. golf fans....but he acts like a poor sport....maybe its his "firey" compteitive nature....don't know.

It has nothing to do with the Us vs Them thing. Look at Ernie Els, Paddy, Clarke, Justin Rose, class acts. When you act like an idiot, you have to accept the consequences. See Rory Sabatini....Don't cry about it.

I have not liked Sergio since the day he leapt on to the scene at the PGA Championship. I thought he was a grandstander and a punk. His Ryder Cup record is awesome, no doubt. For that week I cheer against all of the European Team. However, when it's over I like Paddy, Clarke and even Monty. There is nothing I see in him to make him worth cheering for. I would be happy if he went away entirely.

Unfortunately Sergio has dug this ditch on his own. While I admire his ball striking, I lost some respect for him at the cup spitting incident. Was he even thinking!!??

Since then I find it hard to cheer for him, but ultimately, if he plays well, I admire his golf. When he starts on how everything goes against him etc., well, then I get annoyed.

As to spitting, well I smoke cigars on the course, and yeah, I do spit. But certainly try to keep it off the greens!
