Hi Guys , I'm a newbie to this forum so I would like to pick your guys brains on this wonderful Game we call Golf.

OK, If I can make better contact with my irons ,if I choke down on them  , wouldn't it make sense that I would control all my irons if I cut down the clubs a little taking a normal grip and not wondering how much to choke? Just wondering?

If your clubs are too long, they should be cut down. Check your lie with a lie board. Generally, when you choke down, you also swing a little more controlled, so there may be a couple of things happening making for better contact.

Does choking down effect the lie angle?

Sure. Do an extreme test. Choke down on your club 6 inches. Make your address. You should see the toe touching but not the heel. Choking down a little shouldn't make a big deal, but if I were to cut my clubs, I'd want to make sure the lie was correct. Irons with a bad lie will not hit straight consistently. The toe or heel will dig in and cause the head to twist. You'll notice this effect a lot with putters. When you take your normal putting address, see if your toe is up or down. Ideally the blade should be square to the ground. When it is that is probably the length your putter should be. I remember Isao Aoki had the toe of his putter way up. He did OK though. :-)

Don't cut your clubs down unless you know that's the right thing for you.  Get fitted to them by a pro. I was the opposite to you, I though my irons were too long.  My club pro used a strike board and white tape to prove they were correct.  He did notice that I had a tendency to hold the club right at the end when we started and got me to have a little of the butt end coming out behind my hands, just a half inch.

You could be choking down for reassurance as it feels more in control with any club, and this may be helping you get it round.  Lets say you got them cut but still wanted the choke down habit, you could end up very bent over in your stance.

Find out if they are the right size for your height and swing.  A pro may advise that you stand too bent over and get you to stand taller and therefore use the clubs at full length.  You need to do some investigation, see why you choke down.  Tall clubs or bent over stance, or just the fact that it's your style.

You won't know the right way forward until a pro analyses what your doing.  Making the wrong decision could wreck your game.

I would agree, chocking down might also create a slight counter balance to the head and that's also helping you to have a more controlled swing and better contact.  Check out the pro's, they don't grip the club with the little finger off the end, they have the butt of the club showing.
