I just purchased a 10.5* 913 D2 , reg phenom 70g, (unfortunately I wasn't fitted as I got a GREAT deal via internet) I hit the thing on range and it was awful, low straight short carry shots, took out the wrench, had a few tweaks, and found by going up to 12* loft with slight draw bias and an upright lie, BOOM! I was carrying further than I've ever done! I love it! However, I believe the phenom 70g is a low/mid launch shaft, which explains my initial displeasure! So what would produce a better, low spin shot? High loft with low/mid launch shaft? Or.... Mid loft, with a mid/high launch shaft? I'm guessing there's lots more variables to throw into the equation but was just after a general unspecific opinion for a 90mph swing? All opinions welcome...

Hitting up on the ball, rather than down on the ball.

Doesn't everyone do that anyway?

I would say most people hit down with the driver.

You could switch out shafts, but it might not change much at all. It's hard to find the right one because no one actually has all the combinations so you can test them. You really just have to buy one and hope it works out.

I would usually see if the swing needs fixed over trying to spend a lot of money on new shafts (trial and error)

You can go to Titleist's web site and look at the custom options, there's a nice chart that shows all of the shafts they offer as either standard or extra price options with their drivers and how they rank for launch and spin.  The Phenom 70 is, indeed, shown as a lower launching, low spin shaft.

As usual, saevel25 has a good suggestion in looking at how you're actually hitting the ball.  I'm still working on learning to hit up, or at least not down with my driver, but it does have a huge effect on launch angle if/when I pull it off.

Sadly, if you go the shaft replacement route, you will likely negate the GREAT deal you got via the internet, and the shaft selection will still be a heck of a lot more random than it would have been if you'd gone ahead and gotten a first class fitting.  Good luck.

Agreed! I did check the sight first and had a choice between the diamana 62g or the phenom 70, I'm not really complaining, once I jacked the loft up to 12* it was fine, I usually play a 12* anyway with a low spin head, mid/high launch 62g shaft, but it often fades/pushes a bit, I wondered if I could get a 10.5* up and away with a lower launching shaft. But it seems not, however, the slightly heavier stiffer shaft is producing much straighter shots, I mean really straight! Never faded once! I'm just glad I could adjust the head loft! Phew! , that sure fit system really works! I'm very impressed! But the question was, for a 90mph swing speed, would a higher lofted head with a lower launching shaft produce a better flight than a lower lofted head with a high launch shaft? Or is it the same thing? To be honest I've only played 9 holes with it after hitting a dozen balls on the range, so I've not had a chance to properly dial my swing in with it yet! But I'm always gonna wonder if the 62g diamana, higher launching shaft would have been better!

That is more your swing than the golf shaft. There is little correlation between golf shaft specs and if they produces a push, pull, fade, or draw. It all depends on the swing and how you react to the golf shaft.

I wondered if I could get a 10.5* up and away with a lower launching shaft. But it seems not, however, the slightly heavier stiffer shaft is producing much straighter shots, I mean really straight! I am still skeptical that adding 1.5 degrees dramatically changed your shot shape. I am curious if it was just you getting use to hitting golf balls again. Meaning do you just start the fitting with out warming up. You can easily skew the results if you don't warm up.

I was messing around with Flightscope Trajectory Optimizer. Even if you add 1.5 degrees to the launch angle, and that would probably add something like 200-500 rpm at most. Even then you probably see maybe 5 yards in height difference. I think it was more your swing than the actual change in settings. Those adjustable heads are meant for fine tuning, and really a person shouldn't see drastic changes in ball flight. They were invented so that the tour van's could change a driver spec slightly with out having to physically alter the clubhead, like heating up the hosel and bending it.

To be honest I've only played 9 holes with it after hitting a dozen balls on the range, so I've not had a chance to properly dial my swing in with it yet! But I'm always gonna wonder if the 62g diamana, higher launching shaft would have been better!

I would say that the Diamana S+ Blue might be a better shaft for you. I think it would fit the slower swing speed.

Damn! I knew it, hoping to increase my ss over winter though! My current driver has a vs Proto 60 reg, but it feels a touch whippy as my swing is getting a bit more aggressive! Oh well! I guess I'll have to get on a monitor and see what's really happening!

Update: I've got it working, and you was right! I wasn't hitting up on the ball enough! Now I want the 913f, but I think I'll go with diamana 72 reg, as that will help me get the ball off the grass better! I feel the bassara 55 will be to light and spinny!

General opinion for an average Joe swing with medium tempo who does not cast... that's tough. You may like a 70g shaft.

But generally, a golfer w a 90 Driver SS wants more speed, and OEMs, including Titleist, think a lighter shaft that is mid to low kick with an active tip that is reinforced, may help in general. That's why Titleist offered a made for Mitsu Bassara W 50 shaft - liteweight, active tip reinforced with titanium fibers.

You could back off the loft a bit with this shaft.

If you think the Bassara W would offer too much spin, the Diamana S + 62 may work.

From reading here, loft will have more influence than shaft on spin -- so you might go to ebay or golf reseller like golfshaftdepot (?).

My SS is 90-94 and I'm hitting a Bassara Eagle in a Callaway BB V Series R Flex. at 42g. But it is a different shaft than the Bassarra W, and we are all different. So you've got to go with what you or a fitter think is best for you.

And yes, as someone wisely stated, set yourself up to hit up on the ball.

I put a regular flex Diamana Ahina in my R11S and performed much better for me than the stock venom shaft.  I haven't found anything that feels better to me or gets me a better ball flight.  My driver speed is 93 with a low-to-mid trajectory and getting driver carry of 240-250 range.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
