Hi,

Any ideas on what brand of clubs the top amateur golfers use? I would suppose this is another way of asking what are the best brand of clubs without outside influences like sponsorship etc.

thanks

No way to answer this.

It's all personal preference. I know some people like to stick with one brand. Some have loyalty to one brand. Some mix and match depending on their needs.

Best advice, just hit a lot of different clubs and find out what you like the best. For me I have a short list of what I look for in new club. I like more traditional looking clubs.

From there it is matching up performance with what I am comfortable with.

I agree with @saevel25 , without the influence of a sponsor, amateurs have free reign to play whatever clubs they like and hit best.  Some may strategically play iron brands they'd like to get sponsored by or by who they think they have the best chance of getting a deal with.

In my club the best amateurs play irons all many different manufacturers and models, most seem to play irons that are 3-4 years old.  I find it interesting that they seem to bag the latest drivers, woods and wedges, but their irons and putter are usually older.

True, I was curious as to what brands are solely concerned with quality and not just selling to the masses. Out of the topbrands I have always considered callaway and titleist and ping would fit into this bracket as they are a one sport brand whereas nike, taylormade (addidas), cobra (puma) etc are invested in a all other sports?? Maybe wrong just my thoughts?

Another thought of mine is tour pros keeping hold of clubs outside of their contract- I.e Rory keeping titleist clubs with nike and I think tiger had mizuno when with nike? That to me would seem to indicate a quality brand? Any other examples of this??

All clubs have some sort of quality to them. All want to sell to the masses, that is what a business model is about.

Given Taylormade and Callaway have been going nuts with how much product they are putting out in a short amount of time. In no way does that mean it is a bad product. I think some companies specialize in certain areas better. Mizuno with irons, Taylormade and Callaway with Drivers.

Again, it depends on what you are looking for and what you are comfortable with as a golfer.

Doesn't matter if they have interests in other sports. They all have specific research and development for golf. I am sure being successful in other areas helps out their golf R&D; because of the extra revenue from other sources. Does that translated into a better product, who knows.

I think Rory is 100% Nike right now. The current, "What is your bag" articles on other websites cite all Nike.

There are many examples. A lot of players will play certain brand of irons than different drivers. Some will go all one brand of irons and drivers, but play a different brand putter.

Most ams are heavily influenced by marketing, particularly by what tour players use. In theory this sounds sensible but in reality endorsement deals mean tour players are being manipulated by OEMs into playing their latest push and may not necessarily be playing what they would be playing if it were their choice. I think the smart ams are playing clubs that fit their game.

The clubs are all well made.  There isn't one particular brand that is "better" than the others.  There likely is one that fits each person best, but it's not the same for all.

Just go pay a few bucks and get fitted by somebody who has access to all of the brands and who doesn't care one way or the other which clubs you buy.  A place like Cool Clubs or Club Fix.

I suspect that the answer is that "top amateurs" are just golfers deep down and like the rest of us, they buy golf clubs like most of us do.  Some are brand loyal, some aren't, some buy new sticks when something shiny catches their eye, others hang on to clubs that are working for them for years.

@newtogolf menti oned that at his club many of the top amateurs play irons and putters that are several years old.  I don't think that is surprising since irons are really utility clubs meant for moving the ball some specific distance with accuracy and consistency.  Once you get pretty happy with a set of irons and have their distances dialed in, changing them out regularly isn't likely to improve your scores.  Same with putters I expect.  You don't get to be a top amateur by being less than pretty dang good at putting.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Drivers, and to a slightly lesser degree fairway 'woods', on the other hand, are clubs everyone would like to squeeze a bit more distance and/or (preferably and...) accuracy out of, so those get swapped out when something new looks good.

As has been said, all of the major brands make good golf clubs.  I'm really coming to believe that shaft selection is every bit as important as head selection, and that's where getting a good fitting proves to be so important.  If the 'fitter' can't let you try several different brands of shaft it isn't much of a 'fitting' IMO, and the best fittings happen on a range (with a launch monitor).

Finally, a quick web search of "golf amateur champions in the bag" turned up a few hits.

Putters are definitely one club top ams don't change much. Putting is a fine motor skill that relies on touch and confidence. Once a good player finds a putter they trust they stick with it. This is especially the case for good putters. The best am putter I've ever seen has been playing an old Slazenger Nicklaus anser style putter the entire time I've known him.

Titleist has a reputation of getting to juniors early and often, and then it's off to college with ... TItleist.

How do they do that in light of amateur rules?  What is their strategy for reaching juniors?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Maybe the clubs are "donated" to the schools that these folks attend..?

The best club for top amateurs - or anyone else - are the clubs that work for them.

In 2009, I started looking for replacements for component Eye2-clone irons I had custom-fitted for me in 1994.

I found a new set, and continued to test other iron models that came out in that time. What I found was this: just about all the major OEMs made at least one model of irons I could play - as long as I got the proper shafts.

Remember that tour pros who play sponsored irons must still win with them. I find it hard to believe that pros would play somebody's clubs for sponsor benefits, it they just didn't like the clubs.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
