Think they gave him "Rory" money?  Not!

Ian Poulter to Join Titleist's PGA Tour Staff in 2015 After 8 Years With Cobra Puma

Brendan Mohler | Published: Tuesday, October 21, 2014 | 02:14:19 PM | Comments (0)

Ian Poulter is joining Titleist ’s PGA Tour staff, according to a tweet from the 38-year-old Englishman. A source indicates that the deal will take effect January 1, 2015.

Poulter tweeted last Wednesday that he would be leaving Cobra Puma after eight years with the company.

Poulter plays Titleist wedges and has played Titleist fairway woods and hybrids during his time with Cobra Puma. He has also used a Titleist Pro V1x ball for the majority of his career.

Based on the photo accompanying the tweet above, Poulter’s new deal involves 14 clubs, a staff bag, as well as FootJoy shoes. It looks like he’ll play a Titleist 915D2 or 915D3 driver, a 915F fairway wood and two 915H hybrids, as well as a combo iron set that includes Titleist CBs and MBs.

Poulter will join Jordan Spieth, Jason Dufner , Zach Johnson and Adam Scott as Titleist ’s most high-profile Tour players.

Based on what I've read, Titleist hasn't given out the big money deals Nike does, but maybe they are changing their philosophy.  Poulter is a great international golfer to add to the team but he doesn't have Rory's potential so I doubt he'd get close to Rory money even if Titleist was willing to pay it out.

I guess we'll all be watching to see how the switch to Titleist irons impacts his game, does he improve, struggle or maintain status quo?

The crickets are the sounds of club pros not re-upping with Titleist.... Poults is an "in your face" abrasive type. Not exactly the image when you think "Titleist."

"Titleist" .... I'm thinking Adam Scott, Zach Johnson...

I wonder how IJP Design clothing will go with his Titleist lineup ... will go fine with the Footboys.

I agree with the bold but they need someone with personality / notoriety.  The Titleist team has some good golfers on it but with the exception of Dufner (though mostly for his wife) none will get much media attention.  I think Spieth has a great future but he's so low key I had completely forgotten he was with Titleist

Well, I was doing "The Onion" bit with my first sentence.

It'll be nice for Ian to find a new set of clubs, a new bag and some shoes under his Christmas Tree - just in time for the New Year and the  2015 season. Although I remember from my childhood in England that it's often very frustrating to get new gear at that time of year...Wonder if they'll be giving him a few quid, too?

We need an onion emoticon.

I can't imagine a whole lot of money going into that deal considering his abysmal 2014 year.

Right.

Why on earth would Titleist (or anyone?) pay anything near Rory money?

Yeah Titleist's spends it's money making sure the ball stays #1 and not on "flagship" players.

Poulter won't get close to Rory money because he's not Rory. In order to get Rory money you have to win tournaments and majors.

I guess we'll all be watching to see how the switch to Titleist irons impacts his game, does he improve, struggle or maintain status quo?

He's going from one forged combo set to another forged combo set, he'll be fine. All things being equal I think the 714 irons are better but he can obviously get them made however he wants.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
