Replacing my wedges, inputs needed!

I currently have a 45° PW, 50° gap, 56° sand and 60° lob. Bounces are pretty much wrong for my play style so I wanna replace them all (I've prolly chosen the wrong lofts as well).

I'll get me Vokey wedges so, first question: knowing my PW is 45°, would you go for a 54° or 56°? If 54°, would you also swap the lob with a 58°?

Second, I cannot make my mind about sand's grind: S or M? I'm a slider and take minimal to no divot.

Last, the curses I usually play on got both soft and firm turf conditions. I'm not going to play outside but I think an all around wedge would be handy. So, as for lob's bounce, would you got for a .04, .07 or .08? I'm not feeling confident with the .11 to be honest.

Thanks all for your imputs.

Those are about one club gaps, I don't see that as a "poor" choice?

What are the bounces?

If you could you give us some more information, it would help.

* What model irons do you have?

* Are the GW, SW and LW the same model as the iron set? (For example, all from G25?) If so, tell us the model.

* If not, are the GW, SW and LW all the same model? (What is it?) Or, do you have an assortment of different models?

* What is your distance yardstick for quarter, half and 3/4 shots among your wedges?

Consider getting a wedge fitting. If you play both soft and firm turf, a fitting mat would split the difference between the two.

If you like the 588 RTX CB, you might get them with better bounces and swap out the old ones. Since the 2.0 version has arrived, the original model only costs $99 now at Galaxy and Golfsmith.

IMHO, a  question like this needs to answered, in person, by a qualified swing/club fitter. Someone who will look at your wedge swing, ball flight, and divots.

I actually didn't enjoy my wedges too much. It could be because of the wrong bounce I've chosen, but I really want a change. This is why I'm looking toward Titleist's Vokey wedges.

Of course that would be the ideal scenario but I don't have such possibility where I live (small town in the center of Italy) so I need to rely on other people's thoughts.

It's not a big issue with the gap and lob wedges, as they only have one option, but the sand got two so...

Getting a whole set of wedges is a relatively expensive purchase, so I would spend some time getting them fit to your needs.

As to a Vokey. I've played them at least twice with full sets ... they're okay, but not the be all, end all unless Bob Vokey is grinding them for you. Like most wedges, the leading edges sits a little too high off the ground for max variety of shots.

And  you post a very high hc ... there's a good chance you do not know how to hit the variety of wedge shots correctly - partial and delicate.

Until you do, I think getting fit is useless. You will not get the most from your Vokeys ... or much from them. Don't think it is worth it paying  over $100/wedge.

Until you know what you are doing, and if you want a blade, I'd opt for Bridgestone J40 ... I've played them in 58 and 60 in previous versions -- same grind, same head design.

It is a versatile wedge --- and only $70 ... I'd suggest the 54 and 58 as a 60 is typically tough for a high capper. I've always found that a 58 is a great all around wedge near the greens.

http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/bridgestone-golf-j40-wedge-steel.html

The J40 is an under-rated wedge because Bridgestone hasn't exactly marketed well in the US.

Another option is to go to Callaway Preowned and find some MacDaddy II.

I was a wedge ho for many years -- I just wouldn't spend big bucks on wedges until you learn the intricacies of a wedge. On this site, they teach a variety of shots with vids. Search the site. You will learn more here about pitching and chipping than live instructors.

Still, if you must have Vokey -- 50-8F, 54-11S, and the J40 in the 58 are my thoughts before demoing them. I found the J40 more versatile than a Vokey. And I don't like what Vokey is offering in the higher lofts -- the M might work, but he might have taken off too much bounce where you need it. The K Grind seems too wide and would tend to limit you in tight situations. I'd have to demo.

The best action is to take your time, go to a Titleist demo day outside, or take some Vokeys outside and hit them in a variety of conditions.

But if you're going to put the ball back in your stance to chip and pitch, get something with bounce, because putting it back in the stance takes away your forgiveness. And if you play that way, getting Vokeys is a waste of money -- just buy a nice Adams Watson 3 wedge Set for $99.

I play Vokey wedges.  I used to play 50, 54, 58, all with the max bounce.  Now I just play a SM4 52.12 (F grind) and SM5 58.11 (K grind).  The K grind IMO would be fine for a sweeper.  It is cambered significantly, so even though it has a lot of bounce, the bounce is relieved.  I find that it slides through the rough and sand better than the M grind I had in my 58.12 SM4.

I would not use a 60, but recommend a 58.  I can do anything with a 58 from full shots (85 yards) to 3/4 and 1/2 shots, to pitches and flops, chips and sand shots.  I believe the 60 is for more powerful players.

As for gaps, if you want to play four wedges, then go with 50, 54, 58.  But, you can play PW, 50 and 58 and still cover all your distances by learning to do 1/2 and 3/4 shots with the 9 iron, PW and 50 as is recommended in Lowest Score Wins .  I have been doing this method this year and it is amazing.  It is a more accurate shot and I get more spin to help stick it on greens.  Example: instead of using a full 58 wedge from 85 yards, I now use a 3/4 52 wedge most of the time.  I can get it to one hop and stop even with the lower trajectory.  I will only use the 58 if I need all carry.

I do agree with the posters above about trying it out at an event or fitting.  Also, you can get them on e-bay for a healthy discount.

@boogielicious I tend to leave minimal to no divot at all, this is why I'm going for a lower bounce. Or, at least, this is what theory suggests.

You're all right: I'd try them out but, as said earlier, we don't even have a pro shop in our local golf club no more so I'm a bit wandering in the dark.

Anyone would vouce of S or M for some reason? I mean, other that the turf conditions...

C,

Your location changes your options. Could you possibly contact a resort golf pro in your area and ask for help in choosing wedges? Golf leaders in both USA and Europe are trying to grow the game, so you might be able to find a pro to help you on wedges.

Seriously, I messed around with wedges over the past year. I know I've only been playing a couple years, but I've got help. There's a scratch golfer down the road who's played for decades, and I've had input from a couple of pros.

Sand up here is heavy and wet most of the year, so 14 bounce is too much ... here. In Southern California? Different game.

I would go with the 50 - 54 - 58. - as much as I love my 60.

My clubset has the PW - 45, GW - 50, and I added the traditional 56 (M - grind 10), and 60.

The club gap between the 56 and 60 is fine. The 56 is obviously a Vokey, but the 60 is a Cleveland. The gap between my gap wedge and my 56 is too much. The gap wedge also being a cavity back can be a bit springy and I find difficult to control on the "feel" type partial shots so I'm seriously thinking that since I rarely use my 5 iron during the summer months just grabbing a 52 wedge to fill in that hole.

There is nothing like that heart stopping moment of hitting a full 60 wedge shot over a water hazard and bunker to a short pin, and watching it sky and wondering on the way down "is it going to clear the bunker?" This is our 18th hole. Par 5.

If you go to the Vokey website, they have a section where you can input data about the types of courses you play and it returns wedge grinds that probably make sense for the course types you play.

That's what I did.  Ended up buying a 54-8 and a 58-10 ... don't remember the name of the grind but can tell you they work better than I was expecting! Probably because they were the last of the square-groove models ... but don't tell anyone I'm still using them!

Thanks all for the imputs, they really helped me figuring out which wedges to choose.

As I said earlier before, I cannot test any wedge so I'm about to place a "this is the best I could came up with" order.

I won't change my Cleveland 588 RTX CB gap wedge.

I will change the sand, that's for sure, and I'm thinking about chaning the lob as well.

Sand wedge will be 54°, I'm sure about this. I'm currently playing a high bounce sand (56.14) which causes me pain everytime I pull it off the bag. Also, a slightly lower loft fits better in my progression since the PW is a 45°.

I just was a bit unsure about the grind but a few reads made up my mind as M seems a good choice to have an all around club for shoots around the green (opening up the face and stuff). So it will be a 54.10 M sand.

As for the lob, since I've been talking about lofts progression, I should go for a 58 (I currently have a 60.12 Cleveland 588 RTX CB).

I'm not 100% sure though as I've played a round of 9 holes and I was able to play from the bunker really smoothly. I'm still not confident on sorter shoots but that might be due to a lack of proper practice (I don't really wanna use it from bunkers only).

The choice here is either a 58.08 M or a 58.11 K. Judging from what I've read, the 58.11 K is still a club that gives plenty of playability, but I find it to be pretty much like the lob I already own, so what's the deal? Should I go for the 58.08 M instead?

Ah the struggle!
