Gap between Driver and 4 Iron

Hi guys, Just a quick one here. Getting my new AP1s in a couple of days. I've gone 4 iron to W1.Nxt month I'll be getting new woods. Just want your take on the gaps between the driver and 4 iron. Im thinking of the following: Driver - 10.5 4 wood - 16.5 Hybrid 3 - 21 4 Iron - 23 And so on... The other option is going for a 3 wood at 15 instead of a 4 wood. Thoughts?? Thanks!

I would say go find a launch monitor, or a course were you can hit 10 good shots with each of those clubs and see what your yardage gaps are.

Really your 4 wood is at 16.5 degrees, it is basically half a club stronger than a normal 4 wood. So you probably wouldn't see much distance improvement going to a 3 wood. Yet, if you are hitting your hybrid very close to your 4 wood, I would say with in 10 yards, then you might consider a 3 wood just to get a better gap spacing.

You should hit them first.  I say this because my 4 iron is 24* and my hybrid is 19* and the gap between them isn't that great.  If nothing else changed and the lofts of the two were the same as yours, they'd likely go the same distance.

Also, for the record, my 3 wood is a standard 15*.

If you don't have the ability to hit them on a launch monitor, then consider getting some that are adjustable so you can fine tune those gaps yourself later.  (I have 910f and 910h so I can tweak the lofts a couple of degrees if need be :))

Finding the distance between your Driver and 4i would be the starting point. Then find two clubs that will fill the gap and split up the distance.

Being that you are a 20 HDCP, be cautious about going for a 3W. Recent golf tests show that the average golfer can hit a 4W more reliably - and sometimes farther - than a 3W. A couple extra degrees of loft really help on ball launch.

Also, a 4W sometimes can be hit out of light rough if you need distance.

As for a second club, you could try either a 7W or a 3H. I have been using a 4W + 7W for three seasons, and for me the two work a lot better than 3W + 5W.

I've found the 7W and 3H to be crossover clubs, about equal in distance for me. The 7W launches higher (comes out of rough better), but the 3H launches a bit lower. I plan to use the 3H during fall-spring play to keep ball lower into winter winds; also, rough will be lighter.

If you have trouble with the 4i, you might consider 4W + 3H + 4H. A 7 HDCP player I know swapped his 4i for a 4H. (Or, you might alternate 4i and 4H depending on the course you play.)

Give us an update after  you pick the clubs. :-) I'll be interested to know what shook out.

      Again, I’m not an expert so take it with a grain of salt My question is whether laying back even further becomes too conservative and that strategy is suboptimal as a result? Essentially what’s the cost of guaranteed longer second shot vs the x% risk for hitting the bunker? I think the optimal way to answer the question is looking at strokes gained, in consideration of the hazards and penalties, and picking the strategy that maximizes SG off the tee. I’ve seen some apps that do this but I’m not sure how accurate they are.   And again, asking all this so I can learn what I should be doing in these situations rather than questioning your approach Bill. I would give an example of the course I’m joining this year where I plan to aim at the bunker, but I don’t want to take over your swing thread any further!

      What @DeadMan said. From the satellite it looks like there's tall grass to the right, long of the fairway post-dog-leg. But left it just looks like regular rough all the way to the neighboring tee boxes. If that's true I'm aiming left edge of the green and bombs away every time, hoping for a 30-70 yard up and down opportunity.

      What's the case against blasting a driver at the green? I'm guessing it puts the penalty area/fescue too much into play, but if that's just standard rough around the green, there would be a good case for it. If it's not driver, then I agree with your approach. The one thing I would add is to shade your aim towards the bunkers vs. center of the fairway. Hitting out of a bunker is (marginally) better than a penalty drop.

      Yes, if you are gonna layup, then layup. No need to nickle and dime a few extra yards and bring bunker back into play.
