Went to the range tonight, have a early tee time Sat. morning so I wanted to get some practice in. Always start with my wedges, fine, 9i, still hitting some nice shots, 8i, 2 good shots and then WHAM!!!! it all went sideways, yep, I had the S word. With out boring you guys to death, I them with my short irons, wedges, and even mid irons, I hit like a gizilloin in a row...sigh!

So I took a 5 min break. Usually when things go wrong, I would start with my 60* and work up, this time I decided to start with driver, fist shot was straight, but lower than I like, next one, hit fairly solid, decent height, and distance wasn't to bad. Then I go my 3 wood, outside of my 3i, was the worst club in my bag...not tonight, again, hit low straight ball, the next 6 were pretty nice, well, for me anyway..lol, then I pull my 19* hybrid, first swing, I flushed it...YAHOO!!!, the next 6 or 7 shots were pretty good.

The ? is, has anyone else experienced this..? Normally it's my woods that let me down, not my irons, except tonight..Although I finally figured it out, I thought it was crazy backwards. BTW, it was my takeaway that partly caused the S word, to far outside...doh!!

I think that happens to most golfers at one time or another. The golfing gods were just messin' with you.  Being a 17 handicap, you know that there are days you come out and shoot in the low-mid 80's, and the next are lucky to break 100.  It's just the nature of the game. BTW, you sound a lot like Tin Cup.

Yes, definitely happens to me on occasion.  I do what you do, take a break then go back to basics.  It is usually because I am either not warmed up or I am distracted by work or something.

Occasionally the first time I hit the range in the spring I get the shanks. I just do the tee gate drill and it goes away pretty quick.

Just happened to me 2 days ago. Went to the range to work on stuff, started with my sand wedge and slowly worked my way up the bag. Hitting it really really well until I got to my 7i and then BAM it was likely I had never hit a club before. We're not talking just poor shots, I literally couldn't make decent contact with the ball and was thinning everthing to the right. It was a little distressing standing over the ball and feeling like I had no idea what I was doing anymore. Usually when I hit one of those stretches at the range I just grab a seat for a few minutes then club down and start hitting 1/2 and 3/4 shots just to get back into a groove. This time was different though and I felt like my swing just totally got away from me. The only thing I could figure was I've hit a ton of balls this year and I think physically my body is telling me its time to start winding down the season (although I hate ending it on such a bad note).

Oh yeah. It's happened to me plenty over the years.

Many years ago I was playing in a GAP team match. We got to the club we were playing late and I tried a hurried warm up on the range.

I shanked about half a bag of range balls in a row before being called to the first tee. Somehow I was able to slow everything down

and find my swing that day, but it sure was unnerving.

Earlier this year I skanked one off the second tee(short par 3) and ended up in the greenside bunker of the first hole. Had to play my approach

to the second green while the group on #1 waited to putt. Made a 4.

Happens to me at least four or five times a year.

I can go from hitting pure baby draw shots to shank after shank instantly.

In the last year it has been my 7 or 9 iron that usually triggers it.

Just like you I go to my hybrid or woods to sort it out.

I have tried the 1/2 swing and going back to the wedge route but it doesn't work for me.

Path might be getting a little too far out. Happens to me with wedges sometimes.

I think so, re: the path. I was taking it back much further out than I usually do, and I'm guessing that created the mess..lol

Thanks for all the comments.

It happens to me every so often. Just out of the blue I will shank a few. Not a surprise when it happens.

My fix was to focus on a one piece take away, while also focusing on not swinging from the top. (an inside out swing)

I would ask one question. Before you starting hitting you "S" shots, what was your ball flight? In my case, and I am just talking about me, I usually start hitting pull shots before my shanks show up. If I don't correct those pulled shot soon enough, I will eventually hit that nasty "S" shot .

I always try to do a 1 piece take away, my shanks were caused, I believe by taking the club to far out, which meant I would have had to reroute it back into the slot, so I guess that I was swinging to far out to the right. My ball flight was mostly a baby draw, or fairly straight, I do hit pulls now and then.

Once I started taking the club back in my normal path, the shanks disappeared..Funny, because I have a tendency to have too much of a flat or laid off take away, which leads to bad pulls, and lower shots, and with the longer clubs, i.e 6i to driver, the balls goes really low. Now with those clubs, I get a nice mid-high to high ball flight, although dispersion with the driver is fairly inconsistent, have to focus on pointing my left hand at the target..

Thanks for your comments.
