Just got back from a fantastic 2 1/2 hour range session. Probably the best session of the year for me. It was the most intentional practice I've had all year which made all the difference. Sadly for me, most of the area courses are closing this weekend which leaves me to swinging in the back yard and basement. My question is really for those that are in climates that don't allow for golf. What are your plans to get better during the winter? I'm waiting on my copy of LSW which will be a good fix for quite some time

Usually I concentrate on working out. I tend to not stay committed to working out during the summer.

This winter I will be rehabing my back. Pulled a muscle.

I do a lot of backswing practice indoors over the winter as well.

I would say skiing, but there's not even a semblance of snow around here.

I'll play golf as long as there is no snow on the ground. We've been pretty lucky in general over the last ten years or so (certainly not last year) and I hope to play on some days when the temp is OK.

I do have a trip planned for Florida in February. Nothing but golf.

Well, at least there's a Slight chance we may get some "rain" tomorrow..fingers crossed...even though I'm playing tomorrow.. :-D

Even though our weather is good for golf year around, I will be out hiking in the southwest more so than in warmer months. Maybe go panning for some gold flakes with the grand kids. Pretty much just staying active.

The colder months are good for using the desert . Don't have to carry as much water, no unbearable sun beating down on you, and best of all fewer snakes out crawling around.

I'll still get in at least 1 or 2  rounds every week, with some practice sessions thrown in for good measure. My walking stick for some hikes will be a 2 iron.

Right now work and probably more work following this job, been on 12 hour shifts for the past 12 days and it looks like at least 2 to 3 more weeks are ahead, fall and winter are busy time so the golf game doesn't see the course near as often, however on the 14th of November I'm seriously thinking of getting the new 915 driver.

Deer season opens in a couple of weeks. After that, I'll have to get back to cross-country skiing and perhaps ice fishing. I can't just spend the Winter indoors waiting for it to end.

As far as golf, last year I found an indoor simulator nearby and I plan on going there as often as possible. I'm also looking at the possibility of saving up for a new set of irons. Been eyeballing' the Mizuno 825's but I'll probably talk myself out of it.

I used to be a fitness/workout FANATIC. One thing that I think I will start doing again this winter is yoga. It sounds funny but the flexibility and core strength that comes from yoga is pretty incredible. Also, my back never felt better.

Yoga is great. I plan to get back into working out, myself. My routines are usually plyo-heavy with a couple of yoga days thrown in between. Of course, planning and execution are two separate things ;-) I did find an indoor simulator near me so I'll make use of that, too. If it doesn't snow, I'll try to get out whenever I can. My range has heated stalls, so I can work on my swing all winter.

This is right about the time where I say that I am not taking any time off... in fact, this is when it will usually be consistently below 40*c and just absolutely perfect for golf! Goodo luck with winter guys!

I was hoping @David in FL would invite us all to crash at his place for the winter.  What do you say David?

If not, I ramp up my workouts.  I work on flexibility all the time because I am getting older, but I taper the weights to twice per week in the season.  I will go back to 3 per week.

I've also managed to set up a way to hit foam balls inside at the gym at work.  I brought a mat in and had a little Pugg soccer net from my coaching days.  I will hopefully be using this for my Evolvr lessons.  Otherwise I will have to film at a local indoor range which cost $30 per hour :pound: .  I have a big basement, but the ceiling is not high enough to hit in there.

Here's a couple of photos of my home course in Spokane WA. So long for now old friend... (pictures deleted).

I live in southwest Pennsylvania, and our local municipal courses are getting ready to shut down, as well. At age 64, I am on the back nine of life, so my plans in the winter are more for maintaining than getting better.

Since I am retired, last winter I got a membership at a local fitness center and went about 3 days per week. My routine there would be to work on various machines. Since I walk about 75% of the time when I golf, (I only ride when on vacation or on an outing), I did treadmill and stationary bike work. In addition, I used machines that seemed to help my upper body flexibility, so that I could maintain my backswing, follow-through, and should turn.  After working on the machines, I would play some racquetball, just for fun, although an argument could be made for hand-eye coordination.

At home, all of my practice was done in the basement, so I would invent games using my putters.  Since I have more than 20 putters, I would stage a series of March Madness type of tournaments to see which one would come out on top. There was never a putter that was an overwhelming winner, which has led me to my current practice of playing four different putters during the course of a golf season. Over the last 6 years I have tracked my golf stats. My average putts per round have been 2009 - 31.93, 2010 - 32.19, 2011 - 31.10, 2012 - 32.53, 2013 - 31.18, and this year 31.93.

How are the leaves in Spokane on the courses you play?  During my November play here in PA, I always take old golf balls because I know that I will be losing a few along the way. I played the last three days and only lost two balls.  It's been a good year.

There is an indoor simulator near me.   I'll play in their league and maybe once on the weekend.   They charge $15 for 9 holes which includes $5 for a skins game.   Not bad.  During the weekend, they charge $25 for one hour.

I looked into the indoor simulator near me, and I'm going to pass. They charge $50 per hour weekdays, which is a bit steep. They do have a monthly membership with 2 hours for $70, plus various perks I don't really care about or need, but they neglected to mention the $150 initiation fee on their website. I found out about it when I downloaded the application form. So forget that, I'm out. I can live without playing a round for a few months.

$50/h is definitely on the pricey side but it depends on how they charge. At my place it's $36/h regardless of the number of players. 4 guys can easily play a full 18 in about 2-2.5 hours if no one is dicking around so that works out to about $20 a head plus whatever you choose to spend on drinky-winkies. Even at $50/h that scenario works out to about $30 a head for 18 holes which ain't too bad at all.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
