Breaking out the persimmon wood, nice!

First thing I would do is get the shoulders aimed less left. You can see how the shoulders are aimed well left of the feet and knees. Makes it more likely your swing direction will be left. Note how the shoulders, knees and feet are basically parallel to each other with the player on the right.

On the backswing the shoulder are turning too flat. Causes you to make some compensations on the downswing with the head and how you try to get your weight forward.

Would recommend checking out this video and feeling the left side "bend" more. This thread may also help.

Thanks! Yeah, my driver gets a lot of looks. On the course I usually play, the ninth and eighteenth tee boxes are right next to each other. One time this old guy on 18 kept looking over at me while I was waiting to tee off. He finally came over and said that I was the first person he'd seen using a persimmon driver in over 50 years!

I have seen that driver video where that guy says to place the club 4 or so inches behind the ball to keep from opening your shoulders. I'll have to go back and rewatch it. I tend to slightly draw my irons, so I'll line up square with the driver and see if that helps. Could it also be possible that I have the ball too far forward? I mean, it sure feels like my path is in-to-out, but I push slice pretty much every driver shot.

So I need a steeper swing. How do I know if its too steep? I guess working on a shallower swing with my driver was a bad idea ha I was wondering this earlier. Will a steeper driver swing help me square the face and stop the pushes?

I doubt it's too far forward. I play the ball slightly forward of my left shoulder and it doesn't cause me to aim the shoulders left. Just something you have to be aware of.

Players can get into a bad habit of aiming left because they see the ball going right and it an "unconscious" way to try and fix it. It can actually makes it slice more.

So I need a steeper swing. How do I know if its too steep? I guess working on a shallower swing with my driver was a bad idea ha I was wondering this earlier. Will a steeper driver swing help me square the face and stop the pushes?

Post another video to check if it's too steep or if you see your head going down and forward on the backswing.

Yes everything I recommended is to help you stop pushing/slicing the ball. Right now you're shallow on the backswing, then the head moves down (and forward) on the downswing and you fall back causing the club to wipe across the ball.

Also if you could post a face-on view, that would be great.

You're not really going to do it properly just "trying to do it properly while making a full, normal swing." It's gonna be 98% your old swing…

Definitely gotta change your set-up. Ball is too far back, knees are caved in a little, hands are back.

Take a look at this for more.

And even though you may draw your irons, I again would recommend checking out this thread. You don't have an issue with being under-turned (if anything you go too far) but your weight doesn't get forward on the downswing. The set-up pieces will help.

Ok. So less knee bend. And moving the ball forward should take care of the hands, as long as the face is resting properly. Hands should always be in front of the club face, correct? With all clubs? Also, do you recommend playing the ball from the same position relative to my left foot? Like with a 7i, I would play it from the same position as my driver, except my right foot is closer to the ball?

Not less knee bend, turn the feet out and turn the knees out, they are currently rotated inward, "caved in".

Moving the ball forward will help you shallow the angle of attack, less of those pop ups you're hitting with the driver. For the driver the hands will feel slightly in front of the ball and definitely in front of the ball for all the other clubs.

Also, do you recommend playing the ball from the same position relative to my left foot? Like with a 7i, I would play it from the same position as my driver, except my right foot is closer to the ball?

Driver should be off the the left shoulder and irons will be about the left heel.

Oh ok. Got it. Did anything else stick out to you as needing serious work? Obviously, my swing is nowhere near perfect, but I want to make sure I don't have any other serious fundamental flaws. I went back and watched another recording of myself and noticed that my hips slide forward but my weight seems to stay about 50/50. I'm going to work on driving that right knee towards my left one to get more weight over.

Lol. How did I know you were going to say that. I went out today and practiced setting up with the club and hands more forward. It feels awkward, but it does feel like its more powerful.

  • 3 months later...

I hope to get a video up tonight. I've been working at fixing the driver and they're getting straighter. While practicing today, I noticed several different things.

1. My right shoulder doesn't get all the way back during my backswing. Instead of a 90 degree turn, it feels like a 70 degree turn and I hit a fade/small slice. When it does get back there, my shots are either great or horrible. I think I wind up taking my eye off the ball.

2. My backswing is still shallow, which sometimes causes a serious amount of cupping and a push slice.

3. My arms begin pulling apart before impact, and I wind up with a chicken wing.

4. My swing looks ridiculous. It feels way better than it looks.

Some good news is that I am taking a golf class this semester taught by National Golf Coach Hall of Famer Bob Ellis. The class has helped me mentally so far, but we haven't been out on the tee much. Also, I've started to hit more hooks, which isn't great, but at least they're not slices.
