Hey, everyone.  I have a Sports Sensors Swing Speed Radar and am hoping to increase my swing speed with the driver.  See if i can get into the 260yard drives at some point.  There's lots of exercises on the internet, fast twitch, isometric, etc.  A few paid programs etc.  I'm hoping for a 10-15 mph increase.  What do you recommend?

Generally the human body has 50% slow twitch and 50% fast twitch. Now different muscles have different ratios. Some people say you can train slow twitch to become fast twitch. I am not sure, there is no conclusive evidence to prove that, and now mechanism has been discovered to support that theory. I am more in the camp of you are born with the percentages you have, but you can train them to become stronger.

If you are looking for 10-15 mph club head speed, then you need to increase your swing speed by about 7-9 mph assuming good contact. That is asking a lot. I would say a lot of that could be made up in improving your swing. Look at your handicap 17, I would recommend first improving your swing. I would try to max out what you currently have and figure out how much you want to improve from there. Swing faults and mishits will kill distance.

Example, I probably gained about 5-10 yards in distance this year because my swing is better and I am using better leverage in the swing. What I tend to do is just swing easier and get better contact, but my swing speed is about the same. Still, my max distance is much father than what it use to be, at least 10-15 yards farther. I've it some absolute bombs this year off the tee. I was a 12 handicap and drop to about a 6 handicap. My body hasn't change much over the past 1-2 years.

Even at the PGA Tour level, Rory has gained some significant yards from working out more. He lost all that baby fat and started to get more stability in his core area that lets him harness more power.

For you, I would improve your swing. I would start with working out your core and getting stability in your legs, especially around the hips.

I agree with saevil.  You will get almost no swing speed increase until you have maximized you swing efficiency.    Once you have an efficient swing you can begin to work on increased swing speed.

I was able to add about 4 mph to my driver swing by improving my swing and using much more relaxed arms and hands in the downswing.

Watching GC and MBreed hitting driver and his first focus for more distance was striking the ball square  in the center of the clubface.  Even if clubhead speed was increased , but ball hit off center, result was less distance.

That's my plan.  Perfect strikes with the damn driver.

Thanks for the feedback so far!!

Regarding hitting it in the middle of the club face -- i'm definitely on that band wagon.   using club face tape i was able to see that i was almost never hitting the center, but hitting near the toe.  I adjusted slightly and now hit in the center of the club face much more often.  Not always by any means, but more often.  Definitely get a pop off the club face i didn't often get before.  For me, it's the difference between a 205 yard drive and a 230 yard drive.  Also, tends to be much less straight when not off the center -- mostly slicing.

So the full equation is obviously, good swing mechanics, tempo, sequence, good swing path, hitting the center of the club face, not casting.  Working on all these.   but also looking for any tips on increasing swing speed, in and of itself...

Swing the arms faster. You can train it by swinging a couple alignment sticks together and move the arms as fast as you can.

Improving mechanics, hitting the ball solid, would be the priority though.

MBreed of GC was using 2 rods together and making some noise  His plan, to increase clubhead speed, was to focus on making the most noise with the  rods after 'impact', not before.  No ball of course. If lower body slow and arms fast,  rod noise, a  swooshing sounds, will come before impact point and have lower pitch, thus indicating slower speed.  When rods and mostly lower body used correctly the rod noise comes after impact point, is louder, higher pitched and rods moving faster.

I hope i have paraphrased his 'tip' correctly. Maybe i will buy some golf rods.  Will old fishing rods work? .

Lowe's has rods that are used to show the driveway during heavy snow.   They make excellent alignment rods and are only about $3 ea.
