Hi, so I started playing golf about a month ago and over the first couple weeks i improved dramatically. I started out shooting high 90s but now I am down to the 80s with an 81 my best score. Now it seems like I can't beat 81. I credit that to stupid little mistakes I make that should not happen. Is there any tricks anyone does to get them selves to relax and just concentrate on the ball.

thanks

Welcome to the site - you came to the right place for good information. Those are good scores for just a month. In a nutshell:

  • Get lessons, but take the time to find a pro who knows what he's doing.
  • Video your swing, watch good swings.
  • Read the swing threads in this subforum and the Swing Thoughts forum. As mentioned by @boogielicious , get Lowest Score Wins, it contains everything you need to know to get better, strategy, full swing, putting, equipment, instruction (how to find a good pro), etc...

It would help if you elaborate on what your stupid little mistakes are. Are you getting in trouble off the tee? Short game problems? Putting woes?

As mentioned, the Lowest Score Wins book is awesome. It breaks down the game and tells you what is good to focus on to start cutting strokes right away.

I shot an 80 one of my first times out, but I ran out of balls on the 7th and couldn't finish.

It's not a trick, but I play more relax because of my pre-shot routine.

You will need to chart you game, and find where you are losing strokes which is keeping you from breaking into the high 70s. Once you know that, you work on those aspects of your game, while not ignoring the good parts of your game.

I suspect after only playing for a month, and you are already  playing in the 80s, you might want to just keep on doing what you are doing, while working more on your short game. Maybe throw in a little course management strategies too.

I thought maybe they couldn't figure out the timing on the windmill...

It wasn't a long course. Par was 66. But I undertand your frustration. Sometime it's hard to believe that a beginner can be better than someone that played their whole life

I would say my strengths is from anywhere under 100 yards. I started playing on a chip and putt course with 9 holes. I can shoot a 26 in my sleep there. But in real courses anywhere from over 120-200 is where I'm having my trouble. My irons will slice and sometime I just don't feel like hitting the ball square

Check out the book I suggested.  It will really help a lot.

I guessed this, and 15 over on an easy course is still pretty good, though. It probably means you have some natural talent.

Your strengths with anything under 100 yards, means simply that you need to get your long game up to snuff. This is a relatively difficult thing to do. It is the thing that differentiates a good golfer from a mediocre one. Even though a 65 par rated course is going to be pretty short, you will limit your scores until you can get your drives out to 200+ on average (which includes all your tops/duffs/ etc.). I am guessing that you are depending upon really good golf up close to the hole to shoot the low 80s.

Don't be disappointed if you feel like you need to "start over" so to speak, but one month of playing and being pretty good 100 yards and in probably means that you just need to work on your long game. Look up 5SK.

I agree with @boogielicious LSW is a book that contains pretty much everything you need to learn.
