I'm guessing that most of the golfers on The Sand Trap have an eagle or two or more, but here is my question: Is anyone still looking for their first eagle?

If so, would you be willing to share some of your stories of frustration?

Still looking for my first. Been playing for just over 7 years. Hady closest chance about a month ago when a 130 yard approach was left 2 inches from the hole. Have played the last 6 years from tees that were too long, but with me getting my group to move up, more GIRs will give me a chance at joining the eagle club.

I have one, and it was very lucky. It came on a downhill, downwind, par 5. After a solid (for me) drive and 3 wood, I was short and right in a greenside bunker. Somehow I holed the bunker shot. I have reached a par 5 in two only one time (wind assisted). Missed the long putt on that one though.

Zero for me. I've witnesses quite a few, but none have really been impressive, they've all been more of the WTF, pure flukey luck variety. Closest I've come is holing out from a bunker to an elevated green. Probably about 30-35 yards, couldn't see the pin from the bunker, looked all along the back fringe of the green thinking I had overshot but then my sister said, "hey, here it is in the hole!" Unfortunately I was 2 over on the hole before I even stepped into the bunker, still felt pretty good though.

March 2010.  I haven't been on a green in two on a par 5 since then.

I'd guess that more golfers here have never had one than have. I think the poll needs to include "zero"....! I haven't had one in 3 years. I'm not a long hitter....but I'm longer than the average golfer. Only 6 or 7 total.......over 45 years of playing a lot of golf.

Tee'd off on 16th at Torrey Pines North, pulled it OB.  Next tee'd off again to middle of the fairway about 120 yards out.  Next shot, 9 iron lands on the green, bounced once and slow rolled into the hole... For a par.  The eagle that wasn't.

I've never had an eagle.  Maybe today.

Very much like me.  It is easy for me to remember the last putt at eagle, which I missed - 3rd hole on the New Course, St. Andrews.  Last made eagle was in 2011 on a short par 5.

I probably have had more than my fair share.  More than 10, but less than 13 I would suppose. I don't really know the exact number. I do remember my first one on a 565 yard  par 5. I pitched that one in from 30+/- yards. I also remember a par 4 eagle using my driver and 3W.on a 460 yard hole. Most have been lucky shots since (just guessing) I have putted less than half of my total eagles for eagles. Most have been chips, and pitches. Ironically I got my first hole in one before I got my first eagle.

I remade the poll with better options. About ten people had voted already. Please vote again.

0 is now an option, and there is no overlap in the choices now. :)

Still searching. Have had a few close calls on a  short par 3 on a course I play quite a bit and once on a short par 5 that I was on in 2. That in itself was a minor miracle, never repeated, then I missed a makeable putt :pound: Maybe next year........

Still searching. Only been on a par-5 in two once; missed the putt by a foot. Next time I went to that course, they moved the tees up and called it a par-4. Must be because I was capable of reaching it in two, rendering it not a par 5. Had a few GIRs within a foot or two, but I don't know how close they were.

I have had 3 and ironically none of them have been of the more traditional "on in 2 and make the putt on a par 5" variety.

My first one was a bladed 8 iron second shot on a par 4 that bounced, hit the pin, and dropped in.

The second was when on a very very short par 4 I drove to the fringe and made the putt.

The third was a hole-out of the third shot from about 100 yards on a par 5.  I was playing by myself and it was a bit of a blind shot so I ended up searching around a little before I found the ball in the hole.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I've been close twice. First time my third shot was from about 80 yards and ended up a couple inches short of the hole for a tap in birdie. The second time my drive was a beauty followed by my first ever green under regulation leaving me 20 odd yards for an eagle but left it a couple feet short for a birdie. Otherwise I haven't been close :) Regards Mailman

i got my first one back in the late 1980s.

My brother got his first one last week. He hit a super drive on a short par 4, ending up in the light greenside rough. He took a lob wedge, dropped the shot short of the cup and rolled it in for a 2.

He called me to tell me, as the brand X  lob wedge was a freebie I gave him last year. I never could hit the thing with any consistency, so I'm glad he got it working.

I voted for 10-20.

Six hole in ones and two hole outs on par 4's. I've eagled more than two par 5's so that's how I came up with it.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
