  1. 1. If you could only have one of the following to use for the rest of time in practicing golf, which would you choose?

    • A large mirror (3' x 4' or so)
      8
    • A 120 to 240 FPS camera

Just a fun little quiz… curious to see what people say. :)

Just take the question as it's written. If you could only have one to use for the rest of time in practicing golf, would you rather have a large mirror (3' x 4' or so) or a slow-mo (120 to 240 FPS) camera?

The mirror provides real-time feedback, the camera delayed (but replayable) feedback.

I think that I would take the camera.

I'd take the camera because it can be set up to act like a mirror (connect the camera HDMI output to a monitor) but a mirror will never be able to record your swing so that you can review it afterward.

You don't get to do that. I didn't say a camera with a large external display.

You didn't say I couldn't use a large external display

Even without the large external display I'd take the camera.  I can watch myself do some limited motion movements in the mirror but I don't see it being useful in full swing.  I know I'm a high capper but my slow motion swing and full regular swing are not the same.

Watching myself in a mirror do a full swing would be different from a swing on the range/course  because if I'm on the course I am looking at the ball, not the mirror and my regular swing is too fast to pick up anything significant in a mirror.

Camera.  I can take the camera anywhere (i.e. to the green, in a trap, to the range).

Hmm I'm the only one who voted mirror. One of these things is not like the other :-P Actually I went with mirror because I use mirrors far more often than I use a camera. Sure, I can't see what my full swing is doing, but I'm making changes in slow motion anyway. Don't need 120 fps for that and it's far easier to have real time feedback.

Self perception...

Not referring to Golf, just the bathroom mirror.

Why do I look so much better in the bathroom mirror than I do in a photograph?

Or:

Why does my singing voice sound much better when I'm hearing it 'live' than when I hear it back as a recording?

I think of it as the American Idol effect.

A camera hands down. (Replay) Accidents happen. Break the camera nothing happens. Break the mirror and for next 7 years you might be shanking every other shot.

Easy. Camera all day.

I love the mirror for real-time feedback on how to do/feel certain things, but it's physically impossible to really analyze any part of your own swing at full speed while looking in a mirror.

Also, advice on here would probably be less helpful if people were relying on what you thought you saw at full-speed in the mirror...

Mirror all day. I enjoy making practicing swings in my living room too much.

I have a mirror in my living room. Actual two of them - fo and dtl. :-D

Camera.

With a mirror, I'm left to work on what I think is important and correct.

With a camera, I can upload the video to someone who actually knows what to look for.

Camera because you can have an instructor look at the results, whereas a mirror, the people viewing have to be there.  Then once you and your friends start swinging in your living room, add beer, and you have disaster.  Camera wins hands down.
