The 29-year-old man who died when he was attacked by a crocodile was diving for golf balls at the time, police in Skukuza, Mpumalanga, said on Thursday.

"He was with a friend and the two men had a competition to see who could get the most golf balls out of the water at the golf club's number nine hole," spokesperson Warrant Officer Oubaas Coetzer said.

At the risk of sounding insensitive, Good thing they put down the croc, that will teach it not to attack a human diving in its habitat right after it came out of hibernation.. I feel bad for the kids and his family, but this was avoidable, and there is no one to blame here except you know who!

Well, when you do stupid things, you do it at your own risk.   Not only the guy risked his life and got himself killed but it also led to death of the croc.   It was doing what came naturally to him in his own habitat, and was put down unnecessarily b/c of a stupid doing stupid thing.

Human > animal.

Now If humans can just get the hell out of the way of animals both sides can just live in peace :) But on a serious note I have never understood the fascination with putting an animal like a crocodile or tiger in a zoo or something similar after attacking a human. I understand putting down a pitbull for example after attacking a child, but a tiger in a zoo? Or a croc in the wild? It just seems like a knee jerk reaction that probably happened long ago and now it is the standard for all animal attacks without any regard to circumstance or a animal.. Would they do the same if it was some sort of extremely endangered animal?

Truth is, a 13 foot croc should have been relocated from the golf course long ago; too big to be in that proximity of homes, kids, even adults. Dunno what their policies are there (was that South Africa?). I know they relocate gators in the US and crocs in Australia when they get too big. I do believe once an animal kills a human, regardless its endangered status, it is generally hunted down and killed. Dude was a dumbass but thems the breaks.

It baffles me sometimes by the things people do. Why would you even go in the water when you know crocs are living there?

If there were dinosaurs outside, would you play golf?

Sorry, its the natural habitat statement that gets me. Personally, I would get a pre-killing clearance from a court, so that if a golfer dies due to any animal interaction where the animal was behaving normally, the golfer takes the stroke. This game needs a little more zing.

Human > animal.

I agree that this was a tragic event, and I feel a loss for the parents of their son.

I think Abu was saying that it was avoidable, and unnecessary to put down the crocodile. Putting down the crocodile was probably more consolation to the parents rather than to prevent further attacks.

ROFL!

@Judah Ben-Hur wins this thread.

The guy who was killed by croc didn't win.  I guarantee.

The croc in fact had a fetish on golf balls and was trying his best to safeguard them.   When humans start taking his treasure, he can't stand it and had to send a message.

It didn't cross my mind, but those golf balls look like croc eggs dont they? Reckon the fellow found a pile of them thinking they were golf balls? That would have been a bad, mad, croc-mom scene.

It helps to have some degree of awareness of the local flora & fauna , which will likely be encountered in the region of the world where one is playing - is it unreasonable to expect to find crocodiles in lakes in South Africa?

I don't know, but where I live and play golf these days (southern U.S.), I am far too afraid of the dreaded copper-headed water rattler that apparently turns around and chases you, to bother paddling in the lake to retrieve a $1 Noodle....
