Started back playing a little over a year ago after a 10 year rest. Was playing the best golf of my life until about 6 weeks ago.

Now I can't keep my head down, jerking up on almost every shot. I know the problem is 100% between my ears, but does anyone have any pointers to help combat this ??? Thanks

Yes. Swing easier. I've had that problem in the past because I was trying to hit 350 yard drives and hit my SW 180 yards. Take your backswing, pause at the top slightly and come through with your shot. Concentrate on the inside back of the ball. Watch your club hit that spot. You may even want to put a mark on the ball to concentrate on. There's no shame in hitting a PW 100 yards. When I read a person hits their 7 iron 180 yards, the first thing I look at is their HCP. If it's low, good for them. They've got their swing down. If it's high, that's probably the reason. I have a friend that hit an 8 iron to a 150 yard pin. When he airmailed the green, he felt proud. I hit my 7 iron and putted for birdie. He hit his 8 iron and putted for double bogey. I mention that because he always crows about hitting his irons farther than me and I always tell him his head moves like a bobble doll. I understand about hitting a driver longer than someone, but their irons? He pulls an 8 iron into the bunker and I put a 7 iron in the middle of the green.

I found the following to be effective in reducing my head movement:

A PDF can be downloaded here: http://www.goingleftygolf.com/2014/08/stripes-solved-my-head-bobbing.html .

Just put the paper down, and then ignore it.

The stripes are such a regular pattern, that if you move you're head up or down your depth perception will kick in and remind you that the paper is nearer (or farther) away.

Essentially, if you do everything right, you won't notice anything. If you raise your head, you will notice something.

This cool. The website for lefties is also really cool.

Thanks for sharing it.

Now that's a gadget I like - if it's true and really works. I'll have to try that onthe range.

I had that problem for a while many years ago. A guy told me to concentrate on keeping my sternum, and/or shoulders the same distance from the ball. That as long as the sternum stayed in place, my head would too. What ever the reasoning it worked, and I have never had a head moving problem since. Probably a mental picture thing, or something similar.

I had this verticle head movement problem and "keeping your head down" never worked for me. I just couldn't sense that I was lifting my head. I was taking "keep your head down" too literally. When an instructor said "maintain your spine angle", that's when it clicked. That was the actual problem, I wasn't lifting my head, I was lifting my entire upper body (which caused my head to raise) because I was not maintaining my spine angle.

Something is causing your head to raise. A video would be good.

Don't know what to call it, I am pulling up with my upper body on the down swing right before I hit the ball. It is really bad on the tee box, topping about 4 out of 10 drives.

I bet you're hitting the ball too stiff legged. Keep a little flex in those legs.

I'm going to catch it for this.... How well do you hit the driver at the range?

Some people tense up on the course when hitting off the tee.

Agreed. A little EE can be a good thing, but a lot is a compensation for other swing flaws. Hard to tell without video. @jusanothajoe , you should get a swing thread going so we can see what is actually happening in your swing.

Almost never any problems on the range. Started to state that, but thought it would sound dumb

I agree with @billchao .  Post a video.  There are easy fixes to this and once we see what the cause is, it can be changed.

I hit it similarly on the range and course. Maybe a little better on the course since I focus more. After 40 years, I don't get tense any more. Biggest thing for me is to pick a target and shoot for that. I think too many golfers just get up on the tee and hope to hit a good shot. All your concentration should be to get the ball in play off the tee. If not, expect a bad hole. I've been driving it pretty well with the K15.
