It may be a way of attracting younger people to the game and perhaps it is because I would be considered “an old fogey” but I take issues with Golf Digest’s new format that does not seem to represent the values that are promoted through programs such as “The First Tee”.

To have articles that show how to fake a hole-in-one in order to collect the prize money, an interview with a disgraced enhancement drug user seems to undermine the “gentleman’s game” that promotes honest, fair and competitive play.

Some may disagree but, in my opinion, the magazine is starting to promote the “Me Attitude”

That article showed how a hole in one can be faked and how to watch for the scam. Anyone who wants to go to those extents to get a hole in one can be my guest. They will have to live with the fact that they are a liar and cheat. Perhaps it doesn't matter to them, and in that case it tells me a lot about their character.

International Golf Federation is a participant in WADA. The PGA and LPGA tours have anti-doping programs. The USGA Championships have drug testing and is WADA compliant. Any use of a banned substance must have a Therapeutic Use Exemption.

Members of high school and college golf teams are subject to drug testing. I urge all players to be familiar with the IGF banned substances list if they're participating in any USGA Championship events.

Most of us over the age of 50 are probably taking one or more drugs on the list. Did you know that a decongestant is a banned substance, and some of the ingredients in cough syrup are on the list? As we get older we may tend to have trouble staying alert during the day, so our doctor may prescribe something to help us stay alert. We'll feel sharper mentally too. The medication will be on the banned substances list.

I seriously doubt any of these will interfere with us participating in our local club championships, since we'll be competing against like members, and it's a pretty level playing field. Also maybe our local seniors amateur championship probably won't be impacted either. Anything above that like regional qualifiers probably will.

The point is why feature an interview with Lance Armstrong? A real good model for the kids! cheat (because everyone is doing it) and get caught. Just a wonderful example.

Is the  author same guy as THE Lance Armstrong, the cyclist?   I didn't think so when I read the article.   BTW, I found the article to be one of the more interesting ones I've read.   It helped me understand about cheating in golf and what to look out for.   I am not sure I see any trend in how GD is doing their business these days.

I don't think you can look for anything that says someone is lying about getting an ace. I've seen a beginner go out an get one before. I've also seen guys who hit GIR all day and have never gotten one.

Pretty tough to figure out if someone is lying about that.

The article was about how to lie about getting a hole-in-one so that you could win a new car or cash prize or whatever during a tournament or scramble or something.

Aha, I see. . .

In TPC Tampa and Stonebriar (Irving Texas), they had people sitting by the holes to watch the golfers. Now I know why.

The article had these guys working as a team (2 groups back to back) to pull off a sting to fool the officials.  They won a car but there was a conflict among team members on how to split the winning.   One guy blew the whistle b/c he wasn't getting his fair share.    Apparently, there are other stories like this one where people conspired to cheat the officials (or officials were in it, too) to win a big prize (new car, $10000, etc).   The organizers sometimes hire an insurance company to insure the prize, and the insurance company sends out their "watcher" to make sure there is no cheating.   Where there is money, there is cheating ... :-(

I recall being told this.

BTW, this is a criminal offense often called "fraud", which for the amount of money they were trying to steal is also considered a felony.

The organizers sometimes ALWAYS hire an insurance company to insure the prize,

FTFY.  I don't think anybody would ever offer a prize of any magnitude without insurance.

My mom runs a charity event (a scramble for the Alzheimer's Association of Central California for anybody in the area who's interested - always on a Friday near the end of September) where they have had a few different promotions like this.  For awhile they offered a free car for a hole-in-one, and as mentioned, the insurance company requires several witnesses, including one of their own.  Somebody actually made one once, however, he didn't win the car because he was a teaching professional.  The insurance company charges a lower premium for an amateur tournament than they would for a professional tourney, so he wasn't qualified.

At least one year, they even had a million dollar hole-in-one prize.  That one had stipulations up the wazoo.  First off, only one person got the opportunity, which they won in a raffle pre-tournament, then they held it on the 9th green with the entire field watching.  There was a minimum distance (150 or 160, I can't remember) and, in addition to the eyewitnesses, to qualify for the prize, they required a video of the event.

I was a Lance fan on his quest for his first yellow shirt way back when, I left the band wagon soon after his second TDF win.For what I considered very obvious reasons, which later proved to be true. . That said I too I was surprise to see him featured in any publication for any reason, especially golf where honesty is paramount to playing the game. Poor taste IMO

One can not make any comparison of over the counter drugs that may or may not be in our system, we are not professional athletes, amateurs at best. This is a silly notion.

Looks like Lance Armstrong became an avid golfer.   If he was the writer for the article (not another guy with same name), then the article is very ironic (and I am putting this mildly).

I got fooled to respect him when he came back from cancer to win.   Once I knew "how" he did it, and all his denials, etc., he's just another a**hole in my book.   I will have to be careful if I ever end up playing with him for money :-) .    Back to OP, I guess Golf Digest thought it'd be good for their subscription to have him write the article.   Shame on them.

Stopped reading it months ago. I get it with Next Issue but seems like all I did was flip past ads and read a couple lesson things that I mostly disagreed with so I'm done.
