Can a Odyssey #7 MID that was originally a belly length putter be shortened to 35 or 36 inch?

I seem to remember the shaft offset & bend was altered for the taller model?

I do not have the putter in hand... it will be a hand me down...

The person's intentions are good so I would like to accept the putter but hate to ruin it.

I know the head design and like it but am just not sure the cut down will go well?

Originally I thought cut it down and add a SuperStroke and I would be good to go...

A few Google searches show the MID and regular versions listed differently.

Could it be the lie or shaft angle is different???

Thanks...

I don't think it works.   A few years ago, some of us put belly shafts in standard putters and it was a total failure.  I think that not only will the lie angle be wrong, but the weight of the putter head at that time was different.  We also found out that not all putter manufacturers use the same size shaft.  But hey, give it a try with a different shaft, if you don't like it put the original back in.

I still have not found any info re: lie and angle BUT I did finally find some stats on the Odyssey website. Weight will be heavier (400 vs 350) so the opposite of the standard head to taller shaft example you gave. Light headed putter would definitely be a disaster... But I am thinking heavier head on shorter putter might actually not be bad?? I think some of the counter balanced putters do just that??

I think I can live with the heavier head but now I am even more worried about the angle of the lie?  Were the MID heads really designed and cast differently? Even with a new shaft the lie angle could be wrong?? I may have to visit some shops that carry used putters to compare the heads of MID vs standard #7's.

The problem with balancing the weight is the counterweight you end up with in the handle then makes the overall weight so heavy you end up struggling to pull the club through the shot and get it offline as a result. The only real practical limit you face beside having a club too light is that border you just cant cross because you start applying so much energy to make the heavy club swing happen. That extra energy becomes a problem in and of itself.

I would talk to a clubsmith on this. You talking about a lot more balance change than trimming an inch off a driver shaft.

The belly has a lie angle of 72 degrees. The standard and counterbalanced versions have a lie angle of 70 degrees. With irons a Callaway rep told me shortening them makes the lie flatter by 1 degree per half inch. Don't know if that applies equally to putters or not. Regarding the mid head on a standard length shaft, Odyssey did that at one time and called them "heavy putters" I have a Metal-X Dart heavy putter with a 35" shaft. It's what I have been using for quite a while. The extra weight makes it easier for me to keep the putter on a smooth stroke. If this isn't gonna cost you much, I would take it and consider buying a shaft for it.

They got rid of a lot of soon to be illegal heads with that heavy putter marketing. One I did like was the traditional blade. Because it was smaller mass compared to my usual #7 design it was lighter than most in the tank lineup. It was a scammy thing to do though and the tank #7 is still one of the few #7s that I didnt buy because it was just to heavy for me. I went outside the US marketing and found a metal-X #7 center shaft in London that while being heavier than the White Ice lineup was lighter than the Tanks model. I was kinda PO'ed that it wasnt available here in the USA. I think they brought that setup over after they sold down all the 3rd point of contact heads. This thread just reminded me its probably time to buy a new putter....

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
