Well, driver decision made! Took the opportunity of being off work for a few more days to go and try a few drivers at the nearby Direct Golf (Cambridge). So I thought I'd pass my feelings on...

Firstly I didn't get fitted - gave the pro my swing info and a few clubs I'd like to try and took them onto the range. My ss is around 90 to 95 with a Winter carry of circa 200 yards, Summer 220. My achilles heal is consistency - particularly slicing. Overall I tried the following:

Benross Hot Speed 12 deg (my own club as comparison)

Callaway X2 Hot 10.5 Regular shaft

Callaway Big Bertha V Series 10.5 stiff set to draw bias and 11.5

John Letters TR47 10.5 Regular

Ping G30 10.5 Regular

Conditions were icy - range was white, but the cubicles were OK (undercover). Tended to lose visibility of the balls around the 200 yard mark due to the white ground so can't give definitive distances - just my feelings. However all clubs went over the 200 yard mark, and some probably approached the fence at 250.

First my own club - the Benross. Flies nicely, good height and distance but a definite tendency to slice.

V-Series: immediately felt "fast". I really liked the very light weight, and it seemed very quick. My Benross swing weight is circa D3 whereas the V is D0. Good ball flight, no major slices. Even very poor contacts flew reasonably straight. One that felt like a scuffed shot actually flew 200 yards dead straight!

TR47 is a fixed 10.5. It actually flew very well - it was my surprise club! Fairly consistent with little slicing. Nice height. Didn't wow me like the V Series though.

X2 Hot: I somehow didn't take to this club. Its supposedly one of the most forgiving, but I didn't like it. Inconsistent hits. Maybe its the shaft being 1/2 inch longer than the rest (which were all about the same).

Ping G30. I REALLY wanted to like this club but didn't. Didn't seem to get consistent ball flights and distance from it. Again, surprising, because it has a reputation as most forgiving. I guess it all boils down to swing style...

So overall as you can no doubt guess I really liked the V Series. Bought it - which is a pain, as it was the most expensive!!! I'll try and get some trackman figures sometime soon, see if it has actually increased my SS - it definitely felt like it! And the bonus was it seemed to give the most accurate results for me as well! TR47 was a nice club too. I was disappointed in the X2 and G30. My Benross held its own, but definitely was worst for slicing.

Edit to above: Big Bertha V was set to 10.5 deg and standard lie - it was me misreading it! :-(

However, that does mean that the club was more forgiving (for me) even without draw bias. So that's good! I may actually try it at 11.5 and see what difference I get to distance.

My friend just bought one of these after trying a bunch on a launch monitor, the numbers for this club were by far the best for his swing and so, like you, he bought it and was a bit peeved because it was also the most expensive. I've had a swing with it and it does feel very light and easy to swing! Bit too light for me though! He's hitting his longer than ever, should be interesting come summer! Hope it works out for you!

Nice that you found a good driver.

Now, I need to try it out too.

Hopefully get to my normal golf range tomorrow and give it a try. I know how far my Benross usually goes, so hopefully I can get a better comparison. Looking forward to spring and summer now though - I'd like to be consistently over 250 (carry plus roll). This year I was probably 230-240, but too many shots lost to slices.

Unfortunately, I know how you feel.

I've been playing the Big Bertha V Series for a couple of months now and I really like it; I actually find it very comparable to the FT Optiforce 440 I was playing before but with a larger head. I'll be writing my review of it soon.

Well, that's had an hour or so on the range: 120 balls probably 60 / 70 with the driver. Very happy! I would guess 10 yards or so further than Benross, but much better on mishits. Generally appeared to land at 200 yards whereas Benross was proably 190 (as accurate as the eye can tell at that range...). Also my normal Benross dispersion on the range would probably be 20% OB/deep trouble, 20% deep rough. I'd guess with the V it would be more like 10% OB, 10% deep rough. Definitely more consistent for me - hopefully I can translate that to shots saved on the course!

    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).
    • Wordle 1,003 3/6 🟩🟩🟩⬜⬜ 🟩🟩🟩⬜🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩   felt a little like Wyndham when the first three green and I began the fist pump…
    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
